500 years of Reformation will be celebrated everywhere in 2017, and Leipzig will be no exception. The city is the site of Martin Luther’s appearance in the famous Disputation that confirmed his final break with the Roman Catholic Church. Come to Leipzig and follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach, an avowed Lutheran! Exhibitions, music festivals, the Kirchentag on the Way and many other events will bring history alive as they look to the future.

Nolde and the "Brücke"

photo: Nolde Stiftung Seebüll
The young expressionist “Brücke” group around Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was fascinated by the outstanding painter Emil Nolde. Their almost two-year creative collaboration with him from 1906 induced the beginning of modern art in Germany. For the first time, 150 of their artworks from painting, drawing and printing are presented in this exhibition as a precious documentation of German art history. Open from 12 February until 5 June

Leipzig Region offers a wide range of historic highlights. One you should not miss is Colditz Castle. The history of this iconic castle dates back 1,000 years within which it has witnessed a diverse range of use. However, most famous are the years between 1940 and 1945 when high-level war officers from the Allied forces were held prisoners in the internment camp at Colditz Castle. Despite its escape-proof reputation some POWs (prisoners of war) came up with highly inventive escape plans and managed to flee, which led to the legendary fame of Colditz Castle. Today, the picturesque place overlooking the Mulde River is a popular destination for a day trip from Leipzig. So come and escape to rather than from Colditz!
