The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1415 and can look back over a long tradition.
With over 3,000 students of human medicine and dentistry, the Faculty has close links with the Leipzig University Hospital. Together, the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital are responsible for 48 institutes and clinics and five independent departments, ranking among the biggest medical establishments in Saxony.
The Faculty has received international recognition for its work in the fields of stem cell research, regenerative medicine, surgery and cardiology and at the Leipzig Herzzentrum. Other research topics include neuroscience, endocrinology, immunology and rheumatology, molecular oncology and psychosocial medicine and public health.
The motto of Leipzig's university medical departments is: "Research, teach, heal – from a tradition of innovation."
