Leipzig Festival Autumn

Visionary, diverse & creative

Leipzig's arts and cultural landscape is unique! Whether it be a top class symphony concert in the Gewandhaus, contemporary art in the Spinnerei or alternative subculture, the selection is huge and the offer is enormously broad. This variety is expecially shown with the numerous festivals taking place in autumn, when artists from all over the world descend on the city of culture and exhibitions to present their latest works, creations and programmes.
The "Leipziger Jazztage" festival kick starts the festival season with first rate musicians from all over the world, playing traditional and innovative variations of jazz music. At Germany's largest cabaret festival, LACHMESSE, impressive cabaret artists, witty comedians and artistic clowns strain your laughing muscles every year. You can discover challenging, artistic and socially relevant films at Germany's largest documentary and animation film festival, DOK Leipzig. Furthermore anyone searching for unconventional and extravagant designer items should make a note of Designer's Open and GRASSIMESSE taking place in parallel. The merry-go-round of events is completed by the euro-scene Leipzig, a European festival of contemporary theatre. The choice is huge!

Jazztage (Leipzig Days of Jazz)

The international Leipziger Jazztage is one of the most well-known jazz festivals in Germany. It runs over roughly ten days and opens the Leipzig autumn festival season. At various venues across the city, including the Leipzig Opera House, the Jazzclub Leipzig presents music, which lives on the combination of two opposites like no other art form: individuality and collective spirit.

In 2016 the jazz festival celebrates it's 40th anniversary.

Designers' Open

Once an off-programme of the Grassimesse, the Designers' Open is today a well-established independent design festival. Both events still share the date – the last weekend in October. Jan Hartmann (born in 1974) and Andreas Neubert (born in 1972), the festival’s initiators, felt the urge to link and present local designers in public and first rented retail space to local designers in 2005. Since then, local and international developments of interior, industrial and communication design as well as fashion are presented each year. An extensive event programme including lectures, workshops, movies, fashion shows and parties in the evening complete the fair. Until 2012, old warehouses, abandoned department stores and fair palaces or formerly inaccessible hotels served as temporary showrooms for the latest trends.

GRASSIMESSE

The high point of the year within the GRASSI museum’s special exhibition is the GRASSIMESSE (Trade Fair for Applied Art and Design), an international forum of contemporary applied art and experimental design. It stands in the tradition of the historical Grassimesse, founded in 1920 and famous as “Meeting Place of Modernity”, and was reestablished in 1997.

The offers at the Grassimesse are not only exclusive and spectacular but also crazy. The trade fair is the right place for people interested in contemporary jewellery, ceramics, furniture, accessories, glassware, textiles and toys. In a personal conversation with the artists you can find out interesting facts about innovative materials, techniques, conceptional ideas and designs.
