The 'KarLi' is located in the 'Südvorstadt', a student-populated part of the city, with its ambience of alternative lifestyle, and is the best-known street in the area. The squatter scene and club culture merged here at the beginning of the nineties.
Makeshift bars, DJ turntables and stages were set up in derelict buildings. This is where young people met to find their own kind of private world and an alternative to commercial music.
Today the dominant feature of the 'KarLi' is a combination of culture and international cuisine, which can be enjoyed in the many outdoor seating areas, especially in the warm summer months.
