The 5 Best Parks in Leipzig

From autumn walks to summers of barbecues, ice cream, frisbee and relaxation, Leipzig locals love spending time in the city's numerous parks. There are well over 20 of them. Which park should you choose next time you're looking for the best place to relax? We tested Leipzig's green spaces for you and would like to tell you about the 5 best parks in Leipzig (in our opinion).

Palm Garden – Idyllic and Peaceful

Where is the park?

The Palm Garden is located about two kilometres from Leipzig city centre in the district of Lindenau. It borders on Jahnallee in the north, Richard-Wagner-Hain in the east, Karl-Heine-Straße to the south and the Kleine Luppe and Lützner Straße to the west.

What makes the park special?

Are you looking for a park where you can relax and unwind? Then this is the perfect place. In the Palm Garden, you will find absolute quiet. You will hear no street noise or people playing games and having barbeques or picnics. The thick vegetation of the park completely shuts out the hustle and bustle of the city. The grassy areas are usually quiet and you can laze about by the pond with its idyllic fountain and pavilion. Did you know? The Palm Garden is actually part of the Clara Zetkin Park. In 1955, the decision was taken to combine Johanna Park, Palm Garden, Volkspark Schreibenholz, and Albert Park under the name of "Clara Zetkin Central Culture Park".

Rosental Park – For Romantics

The Rosental covers 118 hectares of a section of park-like land in Leipzig's northern floodplain forest. It is bordered in the south by the Elstermühlgraben, by the River Parthe in the north, and by Leipzig Zoo in the east.

Are you freshly in love? In summer, Rosental offers the perfect setting for a romantic stroll with its beautifully designed flower beds. If you crane your neck you can even see into Leipzig Zoo. The zoo window offers you the opportunity to observe some of the animals.

Lene Voigt Park – Refreshingly Different

Where is the park?

The park was built on the former site of Eilenburg station. This "green lung" of East Leipzig stretches from Gerichtsweg to Riebeckstraße.

What makes the park special?

Leipzig has no shortage of parks, but this one is particularly special. With metal pipes running above the grass and old industrial buildings covered in graffiti, the Lene Voigt Park is not your average green space. After its completion in 1874, it provided the workers at Eilenburg train station with a recreational area amidst the bleak industrial buildings. Today, this green oasis in East Leipzig is a meeting place for families and students alike. On the fringes of the park, you will find playgrounds and sports fields. If you like a bit of action and aren't in the mood for a typical park, then Lene Voigt Park is perfect for you.

Wilhelm Külz Park – Experience History at First Hand

Where is the park?

The Wilhelm Külz Park is located between the Monument to the Battle of Nations and the old exhibition centre. The park is bordered by Prager Straße, Richard-Lehmann-Straße and the Straße des 18. Oktober.

What makes the park special?

You will probably be able to see what makes this park special straight away. It has the best view of the Monument to the Battle of Nations. It was right here in this field that Napoleon lost the War of Liberation in 1813 against the armies of Prussia, Austria, Sweden, and Russia. However, there is no need to worry. Today there are no traces of the bloodbath and only the impressive monument remains to remind us of the battle. In the park, there is plenty of space to relax or play football with a view of Leipzig's most wonderful landmark.

Johanna Park – Close to the city centre for a short break

Where is the park?

The park is west of the city centre in the Zentrum-West district. It is bordered by Ferdinand-Lasalle-Straße in the northwest, Paul-Gerhardt-Weg and Friedrich-Ebert-Straße in the northeast, Karl Tauchnitz-Straße in the south, and Edvard-Grieg-Allee in the southwest. The adjacent neighbourhoods are the Bachviertel, the inner Westvorstadt and the Musikviertel.

What makes the park special?
Are your feet aching from walking around the city centre? Do you need a lunch break or would you just like to find the closest green space? Then Johanna Park is perfect for you! It can be reached from the city centre in about ten minutes on foot and is a great place to pay an occasional short visit. From the parkland, you can even see the City Tower and the tower of the New City Hall. Today, the park is a well-kept area with a little pond and bridge. However, when Wilhelm Theodor Seyfferth bought this green space in 1858 it looked very different. He landscaped the area and dedicated it to his daughter Johanna, who died very young.
