The best way to brave the upcoming cold in Leipzig during the winter is with a shopping trip through the numerous Leipzig Arcades You can warm up in the large passageways and marvel at the great shopping facilities and shining shop windows. In addition, the passages are also visually stunning and are unique venues for art and architecture. The most famous is probably theMädler Passage, which amazes many people with its elegance. It is also home to the Auerbach’s Keller, which became famous through Goethe’s Faust. Barthels Hof is also worth seeing – due to its striking facade. Today you can enjoy traditional dishes at the restaurant inspired by the motto regional and fresh cooking. Or you can go through Speck’s Hof in the Reichsstraße and admire the impressive façade of the former Kaufhof department store.

We recommend, that you take your time and explore other parts of the city too. On our Arcade blog post you can find out more about the highlights of Leipzig’s “Handelshöfe” before you go. Those who are already pining for spring in the winter have an alternative to the cold season. Since the end of January, you can go see the 360°-panorama “CAROLAS GARTEN – a return to paradise” at the Panometer Leipzig. Here you will be whisked away to (already blooming) paradise, which lies at our feet every day, but whose details are often not visible to the human eye. It’s worth taking a closer look at this garden, which has been enlarged a hundred times because here you can discover not only oversized bees, flowers, insects, animal life and more, but also the four seasons and even the artist himself. You will feel as if you are in the middle of a huge hidden picture. So it’s worth planning to spend some time at the Panometer because finding all the details that Yadegar Asisi and his team of artists have hidden in the round picture is not easy – but definitely beautiful and worthwhile! We hope you have fun.

Another alternative to the cold season are the numerous museums in Leipzig. Imagine strolling through the warm halls and enjoying the history, art and culture of the city. Gain a deeper understanding of Leipzig’s history at the Stadtgeschichtlichen Museum (Museum of City History) or visit the Forum of Contemporary History to learn about the history of the GDR and reunification. Those interested in art and culture can visit the Grassi Museum of Applied Arts and the Museum of Ethnography. You can also get lost quite quickly in Museum of Fine Arts inspiring exhibitions. On the first Wednesday of every month, when all the museums offer free admission, you can even explore it for free.

If you are interested in the city’s glorious musical history and want to follow in the footsteps of great composers, you should consider a visit to the Mendelssohn House or the Bach Museum. As you can see, the museum world in Leipzig has a lot to offer even in winter. Kunstkraftwerk is a little different from a traditional museum and more of an exhibition venue for history and art Let yourself be carried away by the multimedia room installations, for example, into the magical wonder worlds of Alice, or walk along the path of Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo in the Renaissance Giants. The experience will literally immerse you in the light of history. You can immerse yourself until 29 January 2020.
