6 Tips for a Rainy Day in Leipzig

1. Museums

The classic thing to do on a rainy day may be obvious but it's certainly not outdated. When the weather in Leipzig is dreary, it's the perfect time to take a closer look around the city's museums . Even those who don't think of themselves as museum fans will find something to capture their interest among the enormous selection of topics and different types of exhibits on display in Leipzig's museums.

For example, how about a visit to the Old Masters in the Museum of Fine Arts? Or perhaps you'd prefer to follow the traces of society and culture in the Grassi Museum of Ethnology ? The Kunstkraftwerk in Leipzig's former heating plant offers a centre for digital and contemporary art. Would you like to find out more about the history of Leipzig? Then stop by the Museum of City History or learn something about our city's eventful past in the Memorial Museum in the "Round Corner" (Stasi Museum) .

In the Panometer, you can experience a constantly changing series of 360° panoramic exhibits by Yadegar Asisi. With the current exhibition, "NEW YORK 9/11 - War in Times of Peace", the artist aims to remind visitors of what happened on September 11 and the events that followed.

With all these options, it could rain for days and you would certainly never get bored. Of course, all these museums are also worth a visit even when the sun is shining!

With regularly changing programmes and shows, the spectrum is endless and will certainly give you a fun day indoors while the rain drips down outside.

It's worth noting that the Krystallpalast Varieté, formerly one of the most renowned and innovative variety shows in Europe, is offering an extravagant dinner show in the historic Spiegelpalast at Wilhelm-Leuscher-Platz during the Christmas period. It already starts on 11 November 2023 and is entitled "GANS GANZ ANDERS" (A very different kind of goose). Tickets will go fast, so make sure you get yours soon!

3. Indoor Shopping

Are you looking forward to extensive window shopping or a full-blown shopping spree in Leipzig city centre, but don't want to trudge from shop to shop in the rain with wet feet? We have a solution for you!

Leipzig Central Station offers a special kind of shopping experience. Leipzig not only has the largest terminus railway station in Europe but also offers over 142 shops and restaurants at the Central Station PROMENADEN shopping centre. We aren't the only ones who appreciate the immense variety of fashion, food, home electronics and comprehensive services available there. The centre welcomes an average of 70,000 visitors each day. For travellers to (or making a stop in) Leipzig, the Central Station offers a gigantic shoppers' paradise that makes the station a popular meeting place for locals and a beloved travel destination for visitors from all over Germany. Strolling around the shops and sampling the culinary delights available on three floors is a great way to spend the day!

The network of Leipzig arcades is not only an architectural jewel that reflects the history of this trade fair city, but it also offers wonderful opportunities for indoor shopping. Stroll through the magnificent arcades and allow the fantastic selection of goods and window displays to take you back to the times of the first trade fairs and send you into a shopping frenzy. A shopping experience à la Leipzig is guaranteed. If you also would like to learn more about the history and significance of the Leipzig arcades, we recommend you take part in a guided arcade tour!

The Brühl boulevard combines a modern 4-star shopping centre with more traditional elements. The current shopping centre in the heart of the city was built on the site of the old warehouse and has, of course, retained its distinctive "tin can" facade. More than 100 shops, a loyalty programme with brilliant discounts and special services (like lockers and a sky football lounge) make for a first-class shopping experience. Plenty of cool new shops await you, but you can also take care of your weekly grocery shopping or stop in for a bite at any of the many and varied food service options. Our highlight: If you arrive by car, you can take advantage of the centre's multi-storey car park with 820 spaces to stay dry even during a cloudburst.

Located right on the market square, you will find the fashion & lifestyle department store Breuninger. Every shopping trip is a unique experience here. With the latest products in fashion, beauty and lifestyle you will be equipped with the latest trendsetting styles.

Between the central German cities of Leipzig and Halle, you will find the Halle Leipzig The Style Outlets. Built in the style of a historic market hall, the centre is home to over 80 brands offering permanent discounts of up to 70%. An absolute dream for trendsetters!
