Park railroad at the Auensee - Leipzig with children

The **recreational area around the Auensee** in the north-west of Leipzig grew out of an amusement park **founded over 100 years ago**. The amusement park has long since ceased to exist. This week on **Hidden Leipzig**, you can find out why you can still have a lot of fun around the Auensee. Get all the facts about the Auensee and the park railroad here - let's go!

The park railroad

Since 1951, the small steam locomotive of the park railroad, then still called the **Pioneer Railway**, has been running around the idyllic Auensee lake. On its circular route, it covers a distance of around **1.9 km** from **the beginning of April to the end of October** and passes through a station and three stops. During its , the miniature railroad takes you on a relaxing ride across meadows with a view of Lake Auensee and through densely wooded sections on weekdays as well as Sundays and public holidays. Only Monday is a day off.

Adults pay €3.00 for a ride on the battery-powered locomotive and €3.50 for the steam locomotive. Children pay €1.50 and €2.00 respectively. You can find the exact prices . Although the train is operated by the Parkeisenbahn Auensee e.V. association in cooperation with the city of Leipzig, **children and young people** work as conductors in their free time.

The former amusement park

After being used as a gravel pit, the area around the Auensee was transformed into an amusement park in 1912. The **Luna Park** with its roller coaster with an Alpine backdrop, a hippodrome, a gondola station, the Luna Railway around the lake, a music pavilion, restaurants and dance halls became a **popular destination for Leipzig's residents**. By the end of the 1920s, however, the attraction of the Luna Park had already waned and restaurants and rides had to close. In 1941, the city of Leipzig became the owner of the Auensee site and was responsible for redesigning the Auensee area.

Although you will no longer find an amusement park around the Auensee today, there are still entertainment options in addition to the picturesque landscape. In the , for example, concerts are held regularly (when there are no compulsory breaks due to the coronavirus). Kids can let off steam on the **playground in the eastern part of the Auensee** on a wooden ship, climbing poles and sand play areas or take a ride on the **park railway**. You can find out why the little passengers play a very special role on the park railroad in the next section.

The floodplain

Did you know that the floodplain area covers 5900 hectares? It stretches from Zwenkau in the south to the north-western border of Saxony and consists of the floodplains of the Weiße Elster, Pleiße and Luppe rivers and their tributaries. The most important and characteristic part of this floodplain system is the **Leipzig Floodplain Forest Landscape Conservation Area**. The Auensee lake is located in the middle of this landscape conservation area and only **five kilometers from Leipzig city centre**.

The groundwater lake, which is up to **10 meters deep**, was created around 1910 as a gravel pit for the construction of Leipzig's main railway station. Until the fall of communism, the excursion steamer sailed across the Auensee and you can still explore the lake by boat today. The Auensee is surrounded by meadow orchards and wetland biotopes, in which the particularly fragrant feels at home.
