In the footsteps of damsels and knights: the Castle Mildenstein in Leisnig and the Rochlitz Castle in the town of the same name. Both medieval buildings tell of their thousand-year history via interactive and family-friendly exhibitions.

Rochlitz Castle

The majestic building of the Rochlitz Castle is a real visitor magnet and our tip for your next family trip in the Leipzig region. Did you know that one of the most impressive and influential women of the Reformation had her widow's residence here? Well, do you know the unknown heroine? We are talking about Elisabeth von RochlitzAs the daughter-in-law of Duke George the Bearded, she implemented the Reformation in her offices against his will. Rochlitz and Kriebstein In one part of the permanent exhibition The focus is on the events surrounding Elisabeth von Rochlitz and the role of women during the Reformation.

You can see in today's office that even little princes apparently used unobserved moments to cause mischief. Presumably Frederick the Wise and John the Steadfast or Ernst and Albert of Saxony immortalized themselves with their doodles on the walls, which remained hidden under a layer of plaster for over 500 years and were only discovered by chance during restoration work. The many motifs from everyday and military life, houses, turrets, ornaments and texts offer you exciting insights into life at that time.

But why you should definitely visit Rochlitz Castle awaits you in the captain's room. The room itself seems uninviting, downright unfinished. The highlight is a so-called virtual reality glassesthat give you a tour through the centuries with their different building periods. You put on the glasses and find yourself in a virtual 3D-Animation of the room. You navigate interactively through the animation with your eyes and can visit the room in different historical eras. A great form of travel!

Also event-related Rochlitz Castle has a lot to offer. For a relaxed arrival on your family trip in the Leipzig region, we recommend the CarsThere are sufficient parking spaces around the castle.

The lovingly restored locomotive, which was built more than 100 years ago, and the meticulously rebuilt passenger carriages, exude a nostalgic flair that is second to none. Perfect for your family trip in the Leipzig region!

Since summer 2017, the new observation car of the Döllnitzbahn has also been used for trips with appropriate weather conditions. On the route, which passes a total of around 50 selected dates per year You can easily get on and off at several stops. Taking bicycles with you is also easy; a cycle path follows the railway line along the river Döllnitz – this way you can ideally combine train and bike rides, even on partial sections.

Once back in Oschatz, it is worth a trip to the city centerDirectly behind the market is the church, which can be seen from afar Sankt Aegidien. Their characteristic twin towers not only look impressive, but can also be accessed from the inside: 199 levels you have to go back, then you are in the middle of the tower keeper's apartment, in which the Oschatz tower keeper lived until the 1960s. In the charmingly decorated dwelling you can take a short break with a coffee, let your gaze wander over the small town from the porch or discover many details in the tiny rooms in which up to 14(!) children of the family stayed at the time.
