Geopark Porphyrland – Land of Supervolcanoes
Geoparks: A journey through Earth's history
A Geoparks is much more than just a beautiful landscape – it is a Window into Earth's historyIn a geopark, significant geological features are made visible, explained, and made tangible. These include unusual rock formations, fossil finds, old quarries, and traces of volcanic activity.
The focus is not only on the protection of these geological treasures, but above all on their educational and tourist useGeoparks invite you to understand the origins of our Earth – outdoors in nature, on themed hiking trails, at interactive stations, at information points, or in museums.
Geopark Porphyrland: The geological treasure trove in the Leipzig region
The National Geopark Porphyryland. Stone Kingdom in Saxony is located east of Leipzig, in the heart of Saxony. It extends across the region of the Northwest Saxon Volcanic Complex – a geologically unique landscape formed by massive volcanic eruptions around 290 million years ago. The result: impressive porphyry formations that still rise from the landscape today as striking hills.
But the porphyry region tells more than just a volcanic story. Over millions of years, weathering, ice ages, and glacial movements have further shaped the region, creating geological diversity – from kaolin deposits to glacial polishes. Even the striking red Rochlitz porphyry tuff has found its way into buildings far beyond Saxony.
Supervolcanoes in Saxony? The explosive truth beneath the porphyry land
The Geopark is also the scene of an extraordinary geological phenomenon: supervolcanism.
Around 290 million years ago, during the so-called Rotliegend period, many parts of Central Europe were home to an enormously large, active volcanic area. At that time, two massive eruptions occurred in Saxony: the "Rochlitz Eruption" and the so-called "Wurzen Eruption," which permanently altered large parts of the Earth's surface. What occurred here was far more than a normal volcanic eruption—it was what geologists call supervolcanism.
What is supervolcanism?
A supervolcano isn't a classic volcano with a typical cone. Instead, a huge magma chamber forms beneath the Earth's surface, which fills with gases and magma over millennia. When the pressure becomes too great, an explosion occurs – thousands of times more powerful than a normal volcanic eruption. This releases enormous amounts of rock, ash, and lava, which can transform entire landscapes and influence the global climate. Such mega-eruptions leave lasting traces in the Earth's crust – so-called calderas. Remains of these calderas can also be found in porphyry land.
Visitor centers in the Porphyrland Geopark
The Geopark Porphyrland is not only a place for geology enthusiasts, but also offers with its visitor centers - so-called geoportals - an experience for the whole family. Whether interactive exhibitions, exciting hikes, or simply enjoying the impressive landscape – everyone will find something to their liking here. Each geoportal sets its own thematic focus and invites you to discover the development of the porphyry region from different perspectives.
Geoportal Röcknitz – Supervolcanoes in Saxony
Im Geoportal Röcknitz Geology comes alive! The multimedia exhibition “Supervolcanoes in Saxony” takes you on an exciting journey through time to the explosive origins of the region – interactive, vivid and fascinating for all ages. Right next door, the Volcano playground “Fred Porphyrstein” for climbing, sliding and playful exploration. If you want to delve even deeper, you can GeoAdventureGarden explore nature with all your senses.
And the best thing: In the geoportal, knowledge can be combined with time and peace – whether Coworking with a view of the green or a Accommodation in the middle of the volcanic cultural landscape.
Geoportal Schaddelmühle – Earth of Ceramics
Want to get creative yourself? Geoportal “Earths of Ceramics” in the Schaddelmühle is all about the raw material clay – from extraction to artistic design. In the former workshops of a clay factory, you can now discover studios, seminar rooms, and exhibitions – or even get involved yourself. Here, regional pit clay is processed into pottery clay in a facility – and in Art workshops, school projects or holiday courses brought to life. Whether you just want to look around or create something yourself – tours, creative activities, and regular art exhibitions make the Schaddelmühle a truly unique experience.
A special highlight: The Open-air gallery along the Mulde floodplain, which combines art and nature. And if you don't want to leave, you can even stay overnight.
Geoportal Rochlitzer Berg - Porphyry House
What does the Rochlitz porphyry tuff have to do with famous buildings such as the grave of Emanuel Kant, the cathedral in Kallingrad, and the Old Leipzig Town Hall? The answer lies in the Geoportal at Rochlitzer Berg.
The Rochlitzer Berg is more than just a striking table mountain. The Geoportal features an exciting exhibition on the origins of the famous Rochlitz porphyry—the stone from which the Dresden Zwinger Palace was built.
A real highlight: the VR time travel in the disused Gleisberg quarry. With the VR glasses, you travel back millions of years and experience how landscapes were formed from fire and rock. Afterwards, it's time for some fresh air: Whether over the porphyry educational trail with 15 stations or the historical circular route with Tower, mountain cellar and hermitage – here history comes to life.
Geoportal Mügeln Train Station - Kaolin Adventure World
White earth, great history – in the Kaolin Adventure World im Geoportal Mügeln It's all about the region's "white gold": kaolin, the valuable raw material for porcelain. If you want to know how clay is turned into the finest cups, this is the place for you! Exciting Guided tours and the multimedia exhibition As well as the Virtual reality experience make the geological background and the working world surrounding kaolin mining come alive.
Particularly popular: A ride on the Narrow-gauge railway “Wild Robert” on Germany's largest narrow-gauge railway network, that takes you from Oschatz via Mügeln to Glossen. Whether diesel or steam, these historic trains allow you to discover the region in a nostalgic way.
This is a real highlight Georoute “Path to Kaolin”, which leads to former mining sites and through the beautiful landscape around Mügeln. And those who like longer trips can perfectly explore the adventure world with the cycle paths“Obstland Cycle Route” or “Döllnitztal Cycle Route” connect – nature, culture and history on two wheels!
Geoportal Hohburg – Museum Steinarbeiterhaus
A journey into the fascinating everyday life of the former stone workers awaits you in the charming Museum Steinarbeiterhaus HohburgBetween old tools, photos, and personal memories, you can feel how closely the lives of the people were connected to the volcanic porphyry rock. In the Hohburg Mountains, two georoutes to explore: The Mining trail leads through former mining areas, the Georoute Kleiner Berg impresses with magnificent views, old quarries and geological traces in the terrain.
If you want to take a closer look, you can join a guided tour with a GeoRanger – perfect for asking questions, discovering special features and seeing the Hohburg Mountains with new eyes.
