On hot summer days, Leipzigers are drawn to the New Lake District. When the temperatures are high, you can relax on the sandy beaches of the Cospudener, Markkleeberger or Störmthaler Sees make yourself comfortable. Crystal clear water awaits you there.
But it wasn't always like this! Where you can swim, relax and be active today, 25 years ago people were working hard. Leipzig Neuseenland owes its existence to decades of extraction, processing and use of the resource lignite. Today’s lakes have been used for many decades as open-pit mines But after the fall of the Berlin Wall in the early 1990s, this came to an end. In the course of reunification, energy policy changed radically. For Leipzig’s open-cast lignite mine, this meant a abrupt endAs a result, almost the entire infrastructure of an industry disappeared within a short period of time. The remaining open-cast mining pits were flooded. The resulting lakes are known today as the Leipzig NeuseenlandThus, the brown coal era has been forgotten, as there is little left to remind us of it today.
