New Year's Eve in Leipzig – Going Out with a Bang!

Once again, another year is over and it is time to ring in the new one.Do you already know what  you're doing this New Year's Eve in Leipzig and who you're doing it with? With friends or family?A quiet evening of raclette or a massive party? As you'll see here, you can have a banger of a celebration in Leipzig, all through the day and into the night. Our tips for an exciting evening and amazing fireworks will help you ring in the new year with much more than just a few firecrackers.

Recharging Your Batteries in the Morning

Can you hardly wait to ring in the new year with your friends? Be patient! There is nothing better than some good food and drink to get your strength up on a day like this. You will need plenty of energy to throw yourself into the new year at full tilt, so start the day with a guilt-free lie-in. Then, after a good yawn and stretch, it's time to head out for the perfect 365th day of the year in Leipzig (the heroes who have to work for a half day or even longer can simply join in the fun later on).

Nevertheless, we will start gently because the first thing to do is to fortify yourself for the long day. Of course, 31 December is a special day for restaurants too. This can make it hard to find somewhere to go for brunch. However, you can always rely on the classic solution on New Year's Eve and head for the Alex in Naschmarkt square where a  breakfast buffet is available until 2 pm.

Alternatively, we suggest you treat yourself to breakfast at Café Kandler next to St. Thomas Church. It offers a variety of international breakfast options  . Whether you prefer a sweet start to the day with French crêpes and croissants or would rather go for savoury options such as American-style sausages and bacon or delicious Italian ham, Café Kandler is rich in tradition and has something for everyone. The café is also well-known for its great coffee and cakes, so no matter what you choose  , you will be well-equipped for the day ahead.

From 9 o'clock onwards, the popular Café Maître on Karl-Liebknecht Strasse offers a menu of French delicacies that will fulfil your every wish. The in-house bakery is the source of its legendary croissants and brioches. And if you're still in the mood for dessert, the attached Maître Pâtisserie will fully satisfy any sweet tooth.

Fortified by a hearty breakfast, you can now continue on your way. For a visual warm-up before your eyes feast on the midnight fireworks, it's worth paying a visit to the Panometer in Leipzig. Here, the artist Yadegar Asisi presents gigantic panoramic images alongside accompanying museum exhibits. Immerse yourselves from an ant's perspective in the current exhibition "NEW YORK 9/11 – War in Times of Peace". Leave yourselves plenty of time to take in the 360-degree artwork because there is always something new to discover!

Icy Thrills in the Afternoon

Having got your day off to a relaxing start, you should now be ready for a bit more action. We hope you didn't eat too much at breakfast, as now it's time to hit the ice! Whether you're an ice skating pro or still finding your feet, winter wouldn't be winter without some ice skating. There's still plenty of time left until midnight, so get your skates on and head for the rink. The best time to slither aroud the Eiszirkus Leipzig rink inside the Kohlrabizirkus complex is between 12 pm and 6 pm. Practice your ice dancing and get ready to waltz merrily into the new year.

A Cosy Evening in Leipzig

It may be getting dark outside, but you still have some time to kill until the main event of the evening. To ward off any hint of tiredness as the evening gets underway, we recommend you head for the Leipzig nightlife. You can walk over to Gottschedstrasse, stroll down the "Karli" or stay in the city centre along Barfußgäßchen. At all three locations, you will be sure to find a pub where you can get warm and enjoy a hot meal. It would be good to have a strong cup of coffee to keep you awake for the long night to come. However, it will also be hard not to sneak in a cold drink or two between coffee and dinner at one of the numerous bars lining these three trendy streets.

Don't get too cosy drinking in the bars though! We still have plans for you! It's time to get moving and take in some fresh air. Temperatures can quickly drop to just above freezing while you are out on your evening walk, so you will need to be prepared! And what better preparation than a detour past the Röseling. Until 6 pm on New Year's Eve, they not only serve high-proof fortification (in the form of Leipzig brandy of course!) but also tasty dips, snacks and wines.

If you want to include culture as part of your evening, then pay a visit to one of Leipzig's many theatres! At Schauspiel Leipzig, for example, you can see "Cabaret"   which is one of the most glamorous shows in the history of musicals.

There is no more harmonious place to ring in the new year than at Leipzig Oper with its annual grand New Year's Eve Gala. If you're lucky, you may still be able to get tickets. Or you can cross over to the opposite side of Augustusplatz and pay a visit to the Leipzig Gewandhaus to enjoy the festive sounds of the New Year's Eve Galaconcert performed by the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester.

When the Corks Are Popping

The hands on the clock are moving steadily towards midnight, so it's time to start looking for a spot with a good view of the Leipzig New Year's Eve celebrations when the air will be filled with fireworks of all sizes right across the city.
Your best bet is to go to either Fockeberg Hill or the Monument to the Battle of the Nations.

Located on the city's south side,  Fockeberg Hill is  high enough to make it the perfect viewpoint, offering an excellent view of the city skyline between the trees. When midnight arrives, you will have front-row seats to the light show filling the skies next to the silhouettes of the City Tower and the New City Hall.

However, if you decide to walk all the way to the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, you will need more time. But maybe you will still have a few snacks left over from Röseling's Gourmet Foods to keep your strength up on the walk. Here, at the eastern edge of the city, you will be far away from the busy city centre. On New Year's Eve, the observation platform is closed,so the fireworks in the city centre will be more of a side show. But don't worry, because the real stars of the show here will be the smaller private firework displays which will look absolutely stunning next to the illuminated monument.

Would you rather be right in the middle of everything? In that case, the best panoramic view of New Year's Eve in Leipzig is from the observation platform of the City Tower. From a height of about 130 meters, you can see the bright lights of the city and beyond.Pricing information for this premium view from the panorama tower is available upon request.Naturally, prices include a glass of bubbly.
