Tips on Enjoying a Coffee in Leipzig

Enjoy fabulous coffee in Leipzig, where so many varieties of our favourite drink are available...

Espresso, double, americano, latte macchiato...

The history of coffee began thousands of years ago on the mountain plateaus of the Ethiopian Highlands. Nowadays, coffee is enjoyed all over the world. In some households, it is even regarded as the true elixir of life. The average German drinks four cups of coffee a day. But coffee is not just coffee! Anyone who drinks a lot of it will know that there can be huge differences in preparation and taste. The little black beans have long conquered the world and our favourite city of Leipzig, but where should you go to find the best coffee in town?

If you share our passion for coffee, you won't want to miss this article advising you where to find the best coffee in Leipzig.

Enjoying a Coffee in Leipzig City Centre

We would like to begin this excursion around the cafés of Leipzig right at the heart of Leipzig in the city centre. Our first stop is Kaffeehaus Kandler which has a long tradition and can be found at two locations in the city centre, St. Thomas Church and St. Nicholas Church. Take a seat and treat yourself to a cup of freshly brewed coffee. When in Leipzig, your coffee should always be accompanied by something sweet. This traditional café serves genuine "Leipziger Lerche" pastry delicacies and its very own speciality known as "Bachtaler".

From here, we move on to the impressive and delicious Kaffeehaus Riquet. This café is worth a visit just to see its remarkable architecture. The building was commissioned by Riquet & Co. in 1908. Its design reflects the company's long history of trade with East Asia and the Orient. The two-storey curved roof tower is reminiscent of classical Chinese architecture. The parapets, pillars, main cornice and round gables are decorated with beautiful coloured mosaics in Art Nouveau style. The two copper sculptures of elephant's heads on either side of the entrance to the coffee house represent the Riquet brand logo. In this wonderful atmosphere, you can relish the flavours of the in-house coffee specialities – an exotic elephant coffee or a delicious Riquet coffee – with a slice of homemade gateau.

We also recommend Café Corso, a family-run company that has been well-known in Leipzig for over 100 years for its excellent coffee and lovingly handmade gateaux, cakes and pastries of outstanding quality. Furthermore, it is one of the few remaining confectioneries that exclusively serves its own handmade tree cake (Baumkuchen).

A list of cafés with a long tradition in Leipzig's City Centre would not be complete without the hip Bohemian Kids Café. In the vicinity of the university, Bara and Michael have turned their passion into a business and now provide countless students with a much-needed daily dose of caffeine. The café is always bustling and has inviting music playing. As well as taking a break from the stress of studying, you can relish your first pink latte. There are also items available for your own kitchen, from cups and coffee equipment to tasty chocolate bars. The Bohemian Kids Café has it all!

Cafés in South Leipzig

If you just follow your nose, the search for the best coffee in town will take you to South Leipzig
Here, you should definitely stop in at Café Grundmann, the last remaining true Viennese Café in Leipzig, and not to be missed by coffee enthusiasts. Here, you can admire the Art Deco flair while enjoying your coffee. This coffee house has been permanently managed by confectioners ever since 1919. In addition to coffee and cake, it also offers a creative selection of breakfast options as well as lunchtime snacks and meals. On sunny days, you can enjoy your food at the outdoor tables in front of the restaurant. And you should of course finish up your lunch break with a cup of coffee.

Espresso, ristretto, doppio, machiato, flat white, cappuccino, americano, pour over, aeropress and much more. At the Uptown Coffee Bar in Riemannstraße, it will certainly take you a while to work your way through the coffee menu. The coffee served at the bar is made exclusively from freshly roasted beans. It is important to the owner that his guests enjoy their coffee break and take their time. He regularly invites various musicians to play at the café and create a relaxed atmosphere.

For a taste of French coffee culture, head to Café Maître in the Südvorstadt district of Leipzig. You can settle down in the outdoor wicker chairs with a cup of coffee, read the newspaper, chat with friends and watch people go by on Leipzig's busy "Karli" street . It is easy to sit for hours in this charming café. In addition to experiencing the French flair, you can also try all the tasty treats our neighbouring country has to offer. The café has its very own pâtisserie where homemade chocolates, baguettes, croissants, brioche, macaroons and of course, quiches are freshly baked every day.

Coffee and Cake in West Leipzig

Next, the coffee discovery tour takes us to West Leipzig. Coffee lovers cannot possibly leave town in this direction without stopping at Café Dankbar. This café is a true multi-talent and not a classic coffee house. In addition to a delicious breakfast it also serves a different lunch menu every week as well as selected wines and cocktails. We can particularly recommend the Sabich Bowl, a traditional Israeli dish of herb falafel, hummus, tahini, boiled egg and katzutz. We also recommend that you book a table! It is the only way you can be certain to get a seat. It is also notable that this café has been working together with local partners right from the start, so fresh ingredients are guaranteed.

If a cup of coffee is more a celebration than a mere pleasure for you, then the Brühbar in Leipzig is the place to go. Here, you can look forward to home-roasted coffee done the Scandinavian way. This provides a very special taste experience and the beans from each coffee plantation acquire their own "sensory fingerprint". What's more, everyone at the Brühbar loves to talk shop about coffee together as well as enjoying a perfect drink. After all, coffee isn't just coffee!

Anyone who loves plants as well as coffee should definitely visit the urban jungle at roots. plantcafé, where you will find delicious coffeeand homemade cakes. As the name suggests, it also offers plants, plant pots, decorations and tips on caring for your plants so you can take the jungle feeling home with you.

Coffee Spots in East Leipzig

For coffee-to-go in East Leipzig, try Espresso Zack Zack right next to Lene-Voigt Park in the Reudnitz district. In addition to high-quality coffee specialities, savoury snacks and sweet treats, this highly popular coffee bar sells accessories for espresso machines and freshly roasted coffee beans. The owner of Zack Zack, Ralf Hauenschild, has worked in the coffee and catering business for over 15 years. Anyone with a craving for coffee who walks into the coffee bar he opened in 2015 can sense his love of Italian espresso. During the week, if there is no time to stay for a while, a pick-me-up with caffeine and a tasty pastry to enjoy on the way to work, university or the park can be had from 8 am.

The cosy Café Bubuin Leipzig's Täubchenweg is living room, café and stage all rolled into one. The owners Marvin and Greta have transformed their café into a home from home. In its remarkable rooms, you will feel perfectly comfortable, just as if you were in your grandma's lounge. Enjoy some sweet and savoury treats and delicious coffee. If the weather is good, sit outside in the pretty courtyard and listen to some live music while you have your coffee and cake. Concerts take place regularly at Café Bubu.

Coffee specialities, homemade cake and savoury snacks are available at Café TRAGO. Enjoy your freshly ground coffee either outside on Stannebeinplatz, inside at a big table or at one of the many window seats.

Delicious Coffee in Northern Leipzig

Northern Leipzig also has a great deal to offer for coffee enthusiasts. At Schwung & Schwebe, the self-proclaimed Gohlis neighbourhood café, you can not only enjoy the truly delicious coffee from their in-house roastery but also happily munch your way through their selection of fresh and tasty homemade dishes. The café is a great place for enjoying the coffee and food, relaxing and chatting. The owners Jens and Max love what they do and attach great importance to working with regional partners who also love what they do.

The next stop is Le Caphe – the first and only family-run Vietnamese café in Leipzig. Here you can sip Vietnamese direct-trade coffee while snacking on tasty homemade cakes and tarts. If you book a table in advance, the team of 2 also serves a daily breakfast with homemade spreads.

Our next recommendation also has a touch of the Far East about it: the Jeepney Café in Gohlis. Here you can enjoy freshly brewed filter coffee made from rare, Liberica or Excelsa beans from the Philippines. The manager Janellsa also offers homemade pancakes, delicious granola and Philippine rice bowls. And if you're feeling your sweet tooth, then you absolutely must try one of her super-sweet cupcakes.
There are almost as many different cafés in Leipzig as there are varieties of the hot drink itself. For true coffee enthusiasts, we highly recommend a visit to these and other cafés!
