Tips on Enjoying a Coffee in Leipzig

Enjoy fabulous coffee in Leipzig, where so many varieties of our favourite drink are available...

Espresso, double, americano, latte macchiato...

The history of coffee began thousands of years ago on the mountain plateaus of the Ethiopian Highlands. Nowadays, coffee is enjoyed all over the world. In some households, it is even regarded as the true elixir of life. The average German drinks four cups of coffee a day. But coffee is not just coffee! Anyone who drinks a lot of it will know that there can be huge differences in preparation and taste. The little black beans have long conquered the world and our favourite city of Leipzig, but where should you go to find the best coffee in town?

If you share our passion for coffee, you won't want to miss this article advising you where to find the best coffee in Leipzig.

Enjoying a Coffee in Leipzig City Centre

We would like to begin this excursion around the cafés of Leipzig right at the heart of Leipzig in the city centre. Our first stop is Kaffeehaus Kandler which has a long tradition and can be found at two locations in the city centre, St. Thomas Church and St. Nicholas Church. Take a seat and treat yourself to a cup of freshly brewed coffee. When in Leipzig, your coffee should always be accompanied by something sweet. This traditional café serves genuine "Leipziger Lerche" pastry delicacies and its very own speciality known as "Bachtaler".

From here, we move on to the impressive and delicious Kaffeehaus Riquet. This café is worth a visit just to see its remarkable architecture. The building was commissioned by Riquet & Co. in 1908. Its design reflects the company's long history of trade with East Asia and the Orient. The two-storey curved roof tower is reminiscent of classical Chinese architecture. The parapets, pillars, main cornice and round gables are decorated with beautiful coloured mosaics in Art Nouveau style. The two copper sculptures of elephant's heads on either side of the entrance to the coffee house represent the Riquet brand logo. In this wonderful atmosphere, you can relish the flavours of the in-house coffee specialities – an exotic elephant coffee or a delicious Riquet coffee – with a slice of homemade gateau.

We also recommend Café Corso, a family-run company that has been well-known in Leipzig for over 100 years for its excellent coffee and lovingly handmade gateaux, cakes and pastries of outstanding quality. Furthermore, it is one of the few remaining confectioneries that exclusively serves its own handmade tree cake (Baumkuchen).

A list of cafés with a long tradition in Leipzig's City Centre would not be complete without the hip Bohemian Kids Café. In the vicinity of the university, Bara and Michael have turned their passion into a business and now provide countless students with a much-needed daily dose of caffeine. The café is always bustling and has inviting music playing. As well as taking a break from the stress of studying, you can relish your first pink latte. There are also items available for your own kitchen, from cups and coffee equipment to tasty chocolate bars. The Bohemian Kids Café has it all!

Our next recommendation also has a touch of the Far East about it: the Jeepney Café in Gohlis. Here you can enjoy freshly brewed filter coffee made from rare, Liberica or Excelsa beans from the Philippines. The manager Janellsa also offers homemade pancakes, delicious granola and Philippine rice bowls. And if you're feeling your sweet tooth, then you absolutely must try one of her super-sweet cupcakes.

Here, you should definitely stop in at Café Grundmann, the last remaining true Viennese Café in Leipzig, and not to be missed by coffee enthusiasts. On sunny days, you can enjoy your food at the outdoor tables in front of the restaurant. And you should of course finish up your lunch break with a cup of coffee.

Espresso, ristretto, doppio, machiato, flat white, cappuccino, americano, pour over, aeropress and much more. At the Uptown Coffee Bar in Riemannstraße, it will certainly take you a while to work your way through the coffee menu. The coffee served at the bar is made exclusively from freshly roasted beans. Coffee and Cake in West Leipzig

Next, the coffee discovery tour takes us to West Leipzig. Coffee lovers cannot possibly leave town in this direction without stopping at Café Dankbar. This café is a true multi-talent and not a classic coffee house. In addition to a delicious breakfast it also serves a different lunch menu every week as well as selected wines and cocktails. We can particularly recommend the Sabich Bowl, a traditional Israeli dish of herb falafel, hummus, tahini, boiled egg and katzutz. We also recommend that you book a table! It is the only way you can be certain to get a seat. It is also notable that this café has been working together with local partners right from the start, so fresh ingredients are guaranteed.

If a cup of coffee is more a celebration than a mere pleasure for you, then the Brühbar in Leipzig is the place to go. Here, you can look forward to home-roasted coffee done the Scandinavian way.
