Science in Leipzig
Leipzig - Home of education and science
Leipzig is home to a wide range of educational institutions with internationally recognised expertise.
Founded in 1409, the University of Leipzig boasts more than 600 years of scientific tradition, making it the second oldest university location in Germany. The Faculty of Medicine, with traditions going back to 1415, is one of the largest research institutions of its kind in Germany today.
University and research
In addition to the University of Leipzig, institutions such as the University of Applied Sciences, Economics and Culture (HTWK), the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (HHL), the Academy of Visual Arts and the Academy of Music and Theatre have a lasting impact on the location for education and research.
In addition, there are numerous other research institutions such as the institutes of the Max Planck Society and the Fraunhofer Society. One example is the BIO CITY Leipzig, a biotechnological-biomedical centre in which business, science and research live and work together.
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is active in a wide variety of environmentally relevant fields.
