Leipzig Bachfest

Leipzig Bachfest 2022

09 - 19 June 2022

Every year in June the city of Leipzig honours its important Thomas Cantor Johann Sebastian Bach with the Bach Festival. It pursues a tradition which Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy had already established.

2022 Leipzig Bachfest: "BACH - We Are Family"

In the 2022 season, Leipzig will be hosting a very special Bachfest. Under the motto “BACH – We Are Family”, almost 30 Bach choirs, societies and associations from all over the world will be travelling to the city on the river Pleiße between 9 and 19 June 2022, to celebrate the composer in the place where he wrote most of his works. They will thus be following in the footsteps of the many branches of the musical Bach family, who used to meet at a particular location in Thuringia once a year throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in order to make music together. Renowned exponents of Bach will perform works by the entire Bach family. Choirs from Europe, Japan, Paraguay, Canada and the USA will perform a wide variety of cantatas in a concert series and over a dozen masses, and the 300th anniversary of ”The Well-Tempered Clavier“ will be marked with celebratory concerts.

The first Bachfest took place in Leipzig in 1908. It was organized for the unveiling of the "New Bach Monument".

Selected pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, who lived and worked in Leipzig from 1723 to his death in 1750 as the St. Thomas choirmaster, are performed.

Around 100 different events take place every year as part of the Leipzig Bach Festival.

Bach-Museum: Celebrating diligence

A white wig and a stern look in his eyes: That’s how we know one of Germany’s most brilliant composers, organists and choirmasters Johann Sebastian Bach. One of only two portraits of him can be found at the Bose-house right next to St. Thomas Church in the city center of Leipzig. This place, which Bach himself once frequented, was built into a museum that Lukas and Paula will explore with you today. Discover fascinating historical instruments, learn more about Bach’s life and find out what hidden message lies behind Bach’s famous portrait.

The world's most important Johann Sebastian Bach competition for young interpreters was launched in 1950. Since 1996, it has been taking place every other year in June in three alternating subjects: piano, harpsichord and violin.

The competition is open to instrumentalists and singers between the ages of 16 and 33.
