The building and the arcade were designed by the architect Emil Franz Hänsel in 1913. Inside the building, two courtyards are connected by low passageways. The architecture of the building incorporates numerous elements of Art Deco as well as elements of Art Nouveau and Classicism. The ground floor and mezzanine, covered with glazed ceramics, are unique and riveting features.

On the ground floor you will find a large number of restaurants which, together with the surrounding bars, are known as the "Drallewatsch" pub district. Furthermore, Leipzig's Central Kabarett has been located in König-Albert-Haus since 2009.
