Discover the most beautiful cycle routes
Miles of idyllic cycle paths lead through a picturesque landscape with historic towns and peaceful villages surrounded by forests, lakes and floodplains. Thanks to a well-developed network of paths, it is easy to explore Leipzig city and its surrounding region by bike. Numerous long-distance cycle routes and main regional bike trails run in all directions and are interconnected, making it easy to design your own tour.
On our long-distance cycle routes, you can extensively explore the region. Connections to other routes such as the Elbe bike trail invite you to continue your journey into neighbouring regions. You can also pedal the long-distance trails in stages. Our cycling brochure gives you a good overview of the complete network of cycle paths in the region.
We recommend you try one of the main cycle routes in the region for an active day out. Themed cycle routes cover interesting topics such as the changing landscape in the region on the Kohle-Dampf-Licht (Coal-Steam-Light) cycle tour or a refreshingly fruity breath of air in Saxony's largest fruit-growing region on the Obstland cycle route. Leipzig's New Lake District remains a well-loved destination for days out and can certainly promise you one thing when you cycle the New Lake District cycle route – lakes as far as the eye can see. It is mandatory to take a refreshing dip on hot summer days!

This map shows an overview of some very personal recommendations by our regional cycling experts. There is something for everyone from short circular routes for families to extensive off-road tours through the Düben Heath. Please note: These tours are not officially signposted and are only shown on the online maps.

You can already see them from a long way off. Large, green cubes with a number on top of a signpost mark the "Knotenpunkts" or "crossroads" on the cycle routes. Together with neighbouring Knotenpunkts, they form a network of signs that help you to find your way around other paths as well as the themed cycle routes.
Good signage is essential for a relaxed cycle tour. The cycling network means you don't need to try and remember any complicated names of towns or villages. You just follow the numbers. It is easy to see how far it is from one Knotenpunkt to the next.
This makes it fun to plan your route!
Today, the 4-lakes-network stretches across the southern area of Leipzig New Lake District. There are plans to extend it further to the south-west.
You can find an overview of all Knotenpunkts here, on an online map or in our brochure called "Unterwegs mit dem Rad" (Out and About by Bike).
