Traditions and Customs from the Leipzig Region

Dresden Christmas Stollen - a Torgau invention?

Who doesn't know the Dresden Christmas Stollen at Christmas time? This year, the traditional Christmas biscuit is 567 years old. Originally created as a simple Lenten biscuit made of flour, water and brewer's yeast, the Torgau baker Heinrich Drasdow refined the recipe in 1457 with ingredients such as raisins, almonds, sugar and butter. The use of butter during the pre-Christmas fasting period was forbidden by the Pope. After increasing protests, the Pope legalized the use of the rich ingredient in return for a donation with the "Butter Letter" in 1490. The donations were used to finance "the bridge from the butter box" over the Elbe in Torgau. Drasdow received a letter of privilege for his Stollen creation and can now be considered the inventor of the Stollen that we know today as the "Dresden Christmas Stollen". At the Dresden court, Stollen was eaten in completely different sizes and thus became better and more well-known. According to legend, the slurred pronunciation of the Dresden residents also ensured that the Drasdower Stollen eventually became the Dresdner Stollen.

Pyramid Pushing in Leisnig

The pyramid pushing begins at 2024:16.30 p.m. with the Leisnig brass band and the Leisnig open-air swimming pool initiative.

Offers can be special offers and discounts, small gifts, but also online tours or online tips that are only valid or available on that day.

competition "Best Stollen Markranstädts 2024"

Open Courtyards in Belgern-Schildau

Advent in the courtyards

The glow of lights and the scent of pine trees invite you to linger and stroll through the old town. Traditionally, the courtyards in Belgern attract visitors from near and far to browse the pre-Christmas markets on the Saturday before the first Advent. In the romantic pre-Christmas atmosphere, the Rolandstadt will be festively decorated - windows, facades, streets and alleys will be transformed into a wonderful Christmas world. Many lights and candles will light up the town center every evening until Christmas. Even a lovingly decorated monastery courtyard will shine in bright lights.

Thallwitz Advent window

The beautiful tradition of Advent windows has been established in Thallwitz for several years. During the entire Advent season from December 01st to 24th, families, clubs, daycare centers and schools as well as the administration take turns decorating a window on each of the 24 days, which is lit up from 18 p.m. and is visible every evening until Christmas Day. The wonderfully decorated windows invite you to take an evening stroll through the town and give some people the opportunity to have a nice chat with neighbors and locals - depending on how committed they are, sometimes even over mulled wine and sausages. This turns the dark Advent season into a convivial time - far away from the commercial pre-Christmas stress.

This year, for the first time, the Advent windows will also be in the Thallwitz district of Nischwitz.

Christmas time in Geithain's city center

Since 1877, Geithain's town center has smelled of freshly baked bread and delicious cakes. The Claus bakery family business places great value on authenticity and regionality. That's why the Clausens are known far beyond the city walls. Their stollen is in great demand at Christmas time, even as far as the Cote d'Azur. And nothing beats a sausage from the Schuhknecht butcher's shop in Geithain. This is a must at any festival in Geithain - the difference is immediately noticeable! The small shop offers over 500 different products fresh every day. Special requests are gladly fulfilled. The packaging is in the ecoBox reusable system, which is contemporary.
