Spirits and Beer: Tradition Meets Zeitgeist

Those who have read Goethe's Faust will know that wine has always flowed readily in the bars of Leipzig. What Mephisto failed to mention, however, were the beers and spirits that are still served today. Beer enthusiasts visiting Leipzig and the surrounding region have come to just the right place. So has anyone looking for a 'liquid' gift for family and friends. A beverage that is perfectly at home on modern craft beer shelves thanks to its ingredients is Leipzig Gose. The top-fermented beer with added salt and coriander may not be a Leipzig invention, but it has had a permanent home here since the 18th century. It is brewed and served in the Bayerischer Bahnhof and the Gosenschenke 'Ohne Bedenken', among other places. However, you can also find classic breweries in and around Leipzig. These brew unique and exceptional beers using modern brewing methods and traditional ingredients. In Leipzig, you can enjoy the art of brewing in the Leipzig Ratskeller, for example.

However, much stronger drinks are to be had at the  Wilhelm Horn Spirits Manufactory. In addition to the traditional Allaschherbal and aronia berry liqueurs, gins and aperitifs are also produced here. Lovers of fine brandy and liqueurs should also make it a top priority to visit the small but wonderful Fuchs Spirituosen Manufactory in Delitzsch. Owner Thilo Fuchs produces the herbal speciality Naumann-Bitter here using a recipe from 1927.

You Only Hear Good Things Coming From Leipzig

Leipzig is a city of music – renowned worldwide and steeped in tradition. The famous Gewandhausorchester looks back on over 275 years of history, for example. In a city with such a strong musical spirit, lots of instruments are needed. There are still instrument makers in the area that skillfully craft them by hand.

Violins, violas and cellos with a unique sound are made at Klaus Ludwig Clement Geigenbau − Fine String Instruments. It is interesting to note that right next door, you can find the oldest music publisher in Leipzig, the FriedrichHofmeister Musikverlag. Brass instruments such as tubas, flugel horns and trumpets are all made at Instrumentenbau Vogt. The future owner of an instrument has the opportunity to be involved in testing and designing it, thus making each one unique. The workshop is open to customers who would like to watch instruments being built.
