Klassik airleben

The Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig's Rosental Park

Thousands of spectators listen to the Gewandhausorchester in Rosental Park.

Classical music under an open sky

Klassik airleben gives the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra the chance to thank their audience at the end of another Gewandhaus season.

The world-famous symphony orchestra plays two open-air "Große Concerte" (big concerts) on two consecutive evenings, to which all Leipzig residents and visitors are invited.

The Rosental Park turns into an open-air concert hall and is a meeting place for families, friends and acquaintances. Thousands of people carrying folding chairs, blankets and picnic baskets flock to the large grassy area in front of the stage.

The atmosphere is singularly captivating. Even non-fans of classical music are enthralled by the music's charm, the summery flair and the relaxed mood. With wine and sandwiches, in shorts and flip-flops, the audience listens to the world-class orchestra's incredible music. It is not unusual for "folding chair friendships" to be forged, and for neighbours to make plans to meet the next year.

Porsche, the Gewandhaus orchestra's close partner,  is primarily, but not exclusively responsible for continuing to provide free entry to Klassik airleben, with several other businesses contributing as well.

The Leipzig Jazz Days

More than 40 years of jazz festival culture

One of the oldest and most renowned jazz festivals in Germany is the International Leipzig Jazz Days. In 2016, it celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Every autumn, the Jazzclub Leipzig presents more than 100 musicians over ten days – heavy-weights and jazz pioneers, as well as innovative newcomers. Concerts are played at the Opera and the Schauspielhaus theatre, in the historical Congress Centre at the Zoo, in churches as well as in numerous scene clubs and in the oldest cinema in the city, UT Connewitz.

With self-initiated projects, commissioned compositions and, above all, a thematic framework, the festival reflects the zeitgeist of jazz: Events in previous years had themes such as "Between Mahler and Miles", "Sound of Heimat" or "Cinematic Jazz". The festival's close connection to the Polish jazz scene distinguishes the Leipzig Jazz Days from many other festivals. With the traditional "Jazz for Children" event taking place this year at WERK2, the festival also offers a cultural highlight for the whole family.
