Farewell and final work
280th Civic Concert
The Mendelssohn Quartet Leipzig has been a fixture in Leipzig's musical life for 30 years, performing regularly at the Mendelssohn House and Gewandhaus, the Schumann House, and the Gohliser Schlösschen. It was founded in 1995 and has borne its name since 1997. Through its postgraduate studies in chamber music at the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy University of Music and Theatre (1996-1999) with Dietmar Hallmann, who was a member of the Gewandhaus Quartet for over 30 years, it remains firmly rooted in the Leipzig quartet tradition. During its studies, the quartet won the Leipzig University Competition and was a finalist in the German University Competition.
Mendelssohn left a significant mark on Leipzig as a city of music: During his time, Leipzig performed the most modern music, revived historical concerts, and rediscovered Bach's music. Mendelssohn's founding of the conservatory promoted young talent, significantly improved the situation for orchestral musicians, and raised the standard of musical quality through a variety of measures. The MQL strives to pursue Mendelssohn's ideals of reviving forgotten masterpieces while simultaneously cultivating curiosity for contemporary musical productions. This, of course, is complemented by a continuous engagement with Mendelssohn's own works.
