In an award-winning one-woman theatre piece with hand puppets and pop music, Bridge Markland conjures up "Faust" from the box at Auerbachs Keller Leipzig – a performance including a 3-course meal.
In this fast-paced, one-woman-plus-puppet, full-playback show, Bridge Markland constantly switches between Mephisto, Faust, and Gretchen. She plays additional characters with hand puppets.
Goethe's texts are enhanced with pop music quotations. Roy Orbison sings "Pretty Woman" when Faust first sees Gretchen. Elvis stirs things up for the inexperienced Gretchen with "Falling in Love."
This love story also doesn't have a happy ending in Bridge Markland's version, but it's a lot of fun.
Not only does she conjure up a refreshing Faust from the box, she also delivers a new perspective on pop music history.
