Young Rita suffers a nervous breakdown and returns to her home village to recover. Through flashbacks, her love story with chemist Manfred unfolds, a man increasingly despairing of the political realities of East Germany. While Rita dedicates herself to work and her studies, Manfred is driven to despair by the ignorance of the officials and leaves East Germany for West Berlin. Rita visits him but realizes she cannot live there and returns home.

Konrad Wolf (1925–1982) studied at the Moscow Film School and subsequently worked as a director at DEFA (Deutsche Film AG), where he primarily made challenging and critical films. He frequently addressed the Nazi era, as seen in his film "I Was Nineteen" (1968). From 1965 to 1982, he served as President of the Academy of Arts of the GDR. With films such as "Solo Sunny" (1980) and "Divided Heaven" (1964), he became one of the GDR's most important directors.
