Nikolai Kapustin: String Quartet No. 1 op. 88
Béla Bartók: Piano Quintet in C major Sz 23
MEMBERS OF THE MDR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
"Reference and contradiction" could be a pair of terms that could be used to describe both works in this program. In Kapustin's case, the tension lies in the fusion between classical form and jazz idiom. "Here, the classical element has more weight for me. The jazz style is just color," said the composer about his now famous string quartet op. 88. Bela Bartók's piano quintet, on the other hand, refers to two traditions, that of Hungarian folk music and the compositional style of Johannes Brahms. In contrast, there is the Hungarian's newly developed harmony, which already points to the stage work "Bluebeard's Castle" written seven years later.
