Guided tour/visit

“Every new situation requires a new architecture.”
Jean Nouvel

The former village of Gohlis was probably founded as a Slavic settlement long before it was first mentioned in a document in 1317. The centre of the old village is still clearly visible today along Menckestrasse. The widening in the middle of the street housed the village green as the village square of the former Langgassen village. For a time, the village school and a prayer room were located here. The main street of the village was lined with farmsteads until the middle of the 19th century. Even at that time, Gohlis was a popular suburb, where people from Leipzig also built summer houses in the area around Menckestrasse. The appearance of the buildings on the street changed until it was incorporated in 1890. It took on an urban character with multi-storey apartment buildings. The tour begins at the Schillerhaus, the oldest village building in the old village, dating back to 1717. From there, the tour continues along Schillerweg, with architectural examples from the mid-19th century, across the church square and back to Menckestraße, where, among other things, outstanding historicist and Art Nouveau apartment buildings can be viewed.

The tour ends at the most striking building in the district – the Gohlis Castle, one of the most important baroque monuments in the city of Leipzig.
