Title: Reluctant Spy
This novel is based on true events.
He tells the story of Frank Ostmann, a young soldier in East Germany, whose life takes a dramatic turn when he is involuntarily recruited by the Ministry for State Security (Stasi). Confronted with the immoral order to monitor everyone around him and, if necessary, to use violence, Ostmann recognizes the trap he had naively fallen into and decides to put an end to it as quickly as possible.
But it's not that simple, because he doesn't want to ruin his future. Torn between his conscience and the pressure of the system, he searches for a clever tactic to extricate himself from this situation. Inspired by an unexpected insight, he develops the strategy of "feigned incompetence": While he deliberately performs his Stasi duties poorly, he excels in areas that correspond to his true abilities. A dangerous double game.
Finally, a race against time begins, as his transfer to the army academy is imminent. Will he succeed in gaining his freedom, saving his love, and outsmarting the system without breaking down?
