Director Helke Misselwitz embarks on a cinematic journey through East Germany: from Zwickau in Saxony to Sassnitz on the island of Rügen. Along the way, she meets a diverse group of women: Hiltrud, a successful advertising executive; Christine, a single mother and factory worker; Kerstin and Anja, two punk girls; Margarete, 85, celebrating her diamond wedding anniversary with her husband; Erika Banhardt, the deputy mayor of Niehagen; and Erika Banhardt, who runs a children's home. They all share stories from their lives, discussing marriage and family, work, hardships, and their hopes for the future.

Helke Misselwitz (born 1947) is one of the most important East German documentary filmmakers. Her best-known works are the documentary "Winter adé" (1988) and the feature film "Engelchen" (1997). After studying directing at the Film Academy in Potsdam-Babelsberg, she worked as a freelance director, and from 1985 she was a master student of Heiner Carow at the Academy of Arts in East Berlin. From 1997 to 2014, she was a professor at the Konrad Wolf Film and Television University in Potsdam-Babelsberg.
