Neil Simon | Sonny Boys | TheaterPack
A comedy about the theater the audience doesn't experience—that is, the private life and the behind-the-scenes life that theater people would never call theater. Unless they're as at odds as Willie and Al, The Sonny Boys, two internationally renowned comedians from the golden era of New York vaudeville.
Because a life on stage, with its endless repetitions, leaves its mark, even scars. After more than 40 years, they were worn out and exhausted, reciting their numbers rather than enjoying them... until one evening after the performance, Al pulled the ripcord and said goodbye to show business—an involuntary career end for Willie, who has since struggled to survive in New York as a freelance actor, while Al tries to get by with his relatives in the country.
Our story begins when “television,” remembering its former favorites, invites the duo back on stage.
What has the separation done to the two of them? Will they manage to reconcile for the sake of old times, or for whatever reason? Manager, assistant, director, relatives try to mediate, to save, to help… all on the brink of despair, where the two veterans teeter on the edge, searching, fleeing, and chasing each other.
