In the freezing rain, the women of the Buchenwald concentration camp Markkleeberg subcamp were driven through the darkened streets of the outskirts of Leipzig on the night of April 13, 1945: 1550 forced laborers - 1250 Jewish Hungarians and 250 French women. Some of them did not survive the deportation march in April 1945 that was supposed to take them from Leipzig to Theresienstadt. For most of them, however, it was a path to a new life.
The memorial trail begins at the site of the former Buchenwald concentration camp subcamp. The women had to wait for hours until the signal to march came. As was the case back then, we will walk into the night. We follow the first section of the trail, which is about 6,5 km long. The memorial trail is not a demonstration in the usual sense, but rather has the character of a pilgrimage: thoughtful and contemplative, peaceful and deepening.
The names of all the women are read out at various points along the way. Music plays to give the women support.
