Since 2008, the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts has dedicated three large and highly acclaimed exhibitions to artistic studio ceramics.
It is one of the collection's rapidly expanding and internationally renowned areas. Outstanding acquisitions and donations now provide the impetus for a follow-up exhibition. It traces the artistic developments from 1946 to the present day and allows the ceramic works, their formal power and glaze beauty, to enter into aesthetic dialogue, repeatedly exploring the relationship between functional vessels and autonomous sculpture.
The two artistic approaches confront each other in the exhibition—not as opposites, but rather in a mutual dialogue. The dual and chronological arrangement makes it clear that modern studio ceramics is increasingly moving beyond mere utility and experimenting with sculptural independence, without losing sight of the "vessel" theme.
