With the Goethe-Institut Armenia's production "The Spirit of Past Future," the city of Leipzig, together with the Armenian capital Yerevan, opens the Yerevan-Leipzig Year of Culture. The official opening is marked by an exhibition at the Techne Sphere Leipzig featuring photographs by Leipzig artist Margret Hoppe and graphics and multimedia works by Armenian designer Nvard Yerkanian. The exhibition reflects on the history of modernity as a cyclical structure in which phases of repression and emancipation do not appear as closed historical periods, but are continuously redefined through reconstructions and rewritings. In the exhibition, both artists contribute their different perspectives, experiences, and memories of modernity, addressing the theme in formally distinct ways.
