Image Cosmos #3 Leipzig in Dialogue
The MdbK presents modern and contemporary art on the third floor, covering approximately 1000 square meters.
Image Cosmos #3 is designed to be cross-media: unlike the two previous versions, graphic art and photography are integrated into the new presentation on a three-month rotation. Also on display for the first time are works that have not been exhibited for a long time, for example by Karl-Heinz Adler or Irmgard Horlbeck-Kappler, as well as recent acquisitions and donations of paintings from the 20th and 21st centuries.
The chronologically arranged tour begins with outstanding works by Max Beckmann, who was born in Leipzig. His specific guiding principle, to grasp the metaphysical nature of reality behind its appearance, corresponds in a special way with the collection of the MdbK, whose focus in the 20th and 21st centuries lies on figurative and narrative visual arts with a tendency towards the allegorical.
The presentation of modern art, which is represented in the MdbK by outstanding individual works, builds upon the room dedicated to Max Beckmann. These include paintings by Giorgio De Chirico, Karl Hofer, Otto Mueller, Max Pechstein, and Max Schwimmer, as well as sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Ernesto de Fiori. The selection reflects the expressive, New Objectivity, and metaphysical tendencies of the 1910s to 1940s. It also highlights the unequal gender distribution within the MdbK's collection.
