Poets' Traces | Following in Schiller's Footsteps through Old Gohlis

Guided tour/visit

Joy bubbles in trophies,
In the grape's golden blood
Drink gentleness cannibals,
The Despair Heroism – –
Brothers, fly from your seats,
When the full Roman circles,
Let the foam spray to the sky:
This glass to the good spirit.
Friedrich Schiller
from: “Ode to Joy” in the early version (1785)

The sensational success of the drama “The Robbers” in 1782 made the then twenty-two-year-old poet Friedrich Schiller famous throughout Germany. However, it also caused him to fall out of favor with his sovereign, Karl Eugen, which had a severe impact on his economic situation and thus also on his work as a writer. Fortunately, Schiller had enthusiastic followers - including in Leipzig.
A circle of friends around the lawyer and writer Christian Gottfried Körner (1756-1831) invited Schiller to come to Leipzig, among other places. Through the mediation of his publisher Georg Joachim Göschen (1752-1828), Schiller spent the summer of 1785 in a farmhouse at what is now Menckestrasse 42, the Schiller House, where our tour begins.

His long walks led the poet through the old Gohlis, across the fields to Rosental, to the Gohlis Mill and certainly also to the nearby Gohlis Castle.

In my life I cannot recall any prophetic certainty as profound as this one.
that I will be happy in Leipzig.

Under expert guidance, you will follow in the poet's footsteps, visit his places of contact and learn historical facts and background information. The city walk is designed to last one and a half hours and ends as a highlight in the ballroom of the Gohlis Castle with the magnificent ceiling painting by Adam Friedrich Oeser.
