Aloha, La Paloma!
Etienne Genedl on »Fridays at Crostigall« about kitsch, exoticism and trauma processing in the maritime entertainment world
White beaches, coconut palms, and a sailboat on turquoise water—hardly any other exotic image evokes such wanderlust in us. What advertising professionals and travel agencies skillfully exploit, however, is far older than TUI, Raffaello, or Bacardi. The daily life of sailors and the often very dangerous existence at sea were gradually transformed into a myth, presented in 20th-century pop and popular music, film, and television as an ideal of freedom. In this entertaining presentation featuring images, music, and film, Etienne Genedl explains how the sea and seafaring became the template for our longings. Using songs like "Aloha 'oe" and "La Paloma," he takes the audience on a journey from the Basque Country to Cuba and on to Hawaii—and along the way, he also encounters Joachim Ringelnatz.
Tickets at a discounted advance booking price are available through our online ticket shop, at Der LeseLaden and at the Ringelnatz Birthplace in Wurzen during the respective opening hours.
