Jefferson Starship is one of the most successful arena rock bands of the 70s and 80s, boasting three platinum and eight gold albums as well as numerous Top 40 Billboard singles. With their 50th anniversary, the band has reached a rare milestone that few bands ever achieve.
Jefferson Starship was founded in the 70s by Paul Kantner and was conceived as a collective of musical adventurers who would contribute to his epic concept albums and eventually his catalog of rock classics. When the current lineup came together in 2012, with many members having joined years earlier, Kantner could not have foreseen that the band would become the highly successful group it is today.
The five members of Jefferson Starship often refer to themselves as a "family" and a "gang," and this camaraderie shines through in their performances. Over the years, they have played in all 50 US states, on five continents, and in countless other countries. A recent tour of New Zealand has been hailed as one of the band's favorite tours, and their live shows continue to deliver a non-stop mix of rock hits.
The current lineup of the band includes founding member David Freiberg, drummer Donny Baldwin (who joined the band in 1982), keyboardist Chris Smith (who joined the band in 1998), guitarist Jude Gold (who joined the band in 2012) and singer/guitarist Cathy Richardson (who joined the band in 2008 after Kantner saw her perform with Big Brother and the Holding Company).
To mark their 50th anniversary, the band Jefferson Starship reflects on the legacy of Paul Kantner, who passed away in 2016. The spirit of discovery and adventure that he instilled in the band lives on in their music and performances. Gold puts it this way: "For me, this 'Paul Kantner thing' – getting into a rocket and flying into the unknown – is the essence of Jefferson Starship. And that spirit is still very much alive in the band today."
