Out of Exile. The Photography of Fred Stein

exhibition
Arts and Culture

The German National Library in Leipzig is dedicating a special pop-up exhibition to Fred Stein (1909–1967). After being forced from his legal career by the National Socialists in 1933, Stein fled via Paris to New York. In exile, he became an important documentarian of the German-speaking exile community and a virtuoso of the 35mm camera.
His photographs not only capture everyday life on the streets of Paris and New York, but also portray the intellectual elite of his time. The exhibition is a collaboration between the German Exile Archive and the Leipzig City History Museum and is part of the cultural year "Tacheles 2026".
