The area of ​​the Leipzig New Lake District include the municipalities of Böhlen, Borsdorf, Brandis, Delitzsch, Frohburg, Geithain, Groitzsch, Großpösna, Löbnitz, Markkleeberg, Markranstädt, Naunhof, Neukieritzsch, Pegau, Rackwitz, Rötha, Schkeuditz, Taucha and Zwenkau.

Here, natural watercourses connect the cultural city of Leipzig with the newly formed lakesBy the end of the brown coal era, the landscape will have changed completely. Today, the majority of the mining pits have already been flooded and opened to the public. Although many villages had to make way for open-cast mining, the remaining ones are all the more fascinating: between the lakes there is now a real beach feeling.

In the heart of Leipzig's New Lake District

Right in the heart of Leipzig's New Lake District, the modern and charming little town of Böhlen, located south of Leipzig between Lake Markkleeberg, Lake Störmthal, Lake Hainer and Lake Zwenkau, is an ideal day trip destination.

Largest open-air stage in the region

There is a lot to discover in the large district town of Borna with its rich history. This includes the Kunigunde Church and the Volksplatz, the largest open-air stage in the region. The last remaining of the original four city gates - the Reichstor - is located on Reichsstraße and today houses the city museum.

Located directly on the Green Ring

Borsdorf is located on the Leipzig Green Ring, a cycle route around Leipzig, and is therefore very easy to explore by bike from the neighboring city. The local museum houses thousands of historical relics from the area. The 1,5 hectare Swan Pond Park is ideal for strolling, relaxing, playing and exercising. Every year in June, the people of Borsdorf celebrate the "Island Festival" in the Swan Pond Park.

At the gates of Leipzig

The town of Brandis is located between Leipzig, Wurzen and Grimma, embedded in a beautiful landscape in the middle of the Mulde valley. The districts can be explored on regional cycle routes. They lead through the great landscape, past quarries, the climbing forest, the Brandis town church, over the Kohlenberg or to Beucha in the "village of stones" with the mountain church that can be seen from afar.

City of Towers

The town of Delitzsch in the north of Leipzig impresses with monuments such as the baroque castle and the medieval fortifications, the town clerk's house and the cooperative museum. But the large town park, the well-kept zoo and the rose garden at the Moorbad are also worth seeing.

The racing city

Because of the international Frohburg ADAC triangle race, which has been taking place for over 60 years, Frohburg is often referred to as a racing town. It is also worth visiting sights such as the Frohburg Castle and Museum, the Schwind Pavilion, the impressive Gnandstein Castle or the manor and castle of Prießnitz.

Modern small town with special features

Located in the middle of a beautiful floodplain landscape, Groitzsch looks back on a history spanning almost 1.000 years. With the Wiprechtsburg, the town has a place rich in history and culture, which, with its open-air stage integrated into the castle ruins, is a magnet for many visitors, especially in the summer months.

Großpösna and its districts have now become attractions for recreation and culture. The Störmthaler Lake, for example, attracts visitors with numerous leisure activities such as the floating art project VINETA, the mining technology park and the network of cycle paths.

Loving and rural

The municipality of Löbnitz is located in a scenic area. At the beginning of the Dübener Heide, the town is surrounded by the Mulde floodplain and the Seelhausener See. Here, nature can be explored on the designated circular trails around the Großer Goitzschesee and Seelhausener See as well as on the Mulde cycle path.

Naunhof is an important attraction in the Leipzig region. The lovely little town is surrounded by the largest contiguous forest area in the southeast of Leipzig and is therefore also known as the Green Heart of Parthenland. At the numerous bathing lakes, guests can experience pure nature.

On the shore of Lake Hainer

There is a lot to discover and experience in the municipality of Neukieritzsch, located in the southern Leipzig Neuseenland. Colorful holiday homes and apartments line the promenade at the Kahnsdorf lagoon on the Hainer See. The home of world-famous organs

Rötha, on the old trade route from Altenburg to Leipzig, was first mentioned in documents in 1127. Today, the town is known primarily for its two churches with the world-famous organs built by master organ builder Gottfried Silbermann.

Parks, the Parthe, which meanders through the town and its districts, and leisure activities for young and old offer ideal opportunities to stop by Taucha. Event Highlights 2024

Ob festivals, Exhibitions, Concerts or Sporting events – the year holds many exciting highlights in Leipzig’s New Lake District.

Every year on first weekend in May the hiking event “7-Lakes Hike“ with over 6.000 participants. But also Dragon boat festivals, sailing regattas or international canoe competitions im Canoe Park Markkleeberg have long since become popular visitor magnets. 

For special ones cultural experiences The numerous shows, musicals and concerts on the lake stage of the Biedermeier beach in Hayna. In addition, the largest indie rock festival in East Germany, the Highfield Festival, at Störmthaler Lake. 

The most important historical event in Leipzig’s New Lake District is the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1813, which marked the beginning of Napoleon's downfall. Every year in October, the historical sites in and around Leipzig tourist event magnets for visitors from the the whole world.
