The approximately 75.000 hectare area extends in the river landscapes of the Mulde and Elbe across the two federal states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and is considered the largest contiguous mixed forest area in Central Germany.

In addition to the rich fauna and almost untouched flora, the Düben Heath has many other natural beauties to offer: marvel at the Rote Ufer, which adjoins the Bad Düben district of Alaunwerk. The steep bank, which is up to 15 meters high, takes its name from the embankments of leached alum earth that was mined here from the 16th to the 19th century. The Gesundbrunnen, located in the middle of the Hochwald, is also a popular hiking destination for young and old. The water from this spring is said to have healing properties.

The Dahlener Heide and the Wermsdorf Forest are two of the most impressive landscape conservation areas in Saxony. In the northwestern part of the Free State, between the Elbe and Mulde, large forests, wide, slightly hilly to flat land as well as numerous ponds and lakes with a diverse flora and fauna are waiting to be explored. The deciduous and coniferous forests, extensive meadows and fertile fields offer cyclists and hikers, water sports enthusiasts, horse riders and horse-drawn carriage lovers the best opportunities for Rest and relaxation.

Due to the high population of wild boar, fallow deer and red deer, both the Dahlen Heath and the Wermsdorf Forest were popular hunting areas as early as the beginning of the 16th century. Augustus the Strong and the Saxon court also appreciated this. Even today, hunters and visitors are delighted when the "Halali" of the hunting horns sounds every autumn for the Hubertus hunt. Game, like local fish, is one of the culinary specialties of this travel region.
