Operation and safety instructions

  1. Activate the request switch at the jetty. To do this, briefly press the blue lever towards the boat.
  2. The lock is initiated by the control system; if necessary, a counter lock must be awaited.
  3. The lock gate is opened and after the traffic light turns green you are allowed to enter the lock chamber.
  4. After all boats have entered, they must be tied to the bollards with ropes, taking into account the height difference of approx. 1 m. Ropes must be attached loosely and adjusted so that paddlers can hold on.
  5. Then the blue request switch must be pressed to continue the lock process. Please only press the request switch when you are sure that all boats have entered. Be considerate of the boaters behind you.
  6. The lock gate then closes automatically and the water level is balanced.
  7. Once the water level has been equalized, the opposite gate is opened and the exit light is switched to green.
  8. It may only exit the lock chamber when the exit signal is green.

  1. The lock has various safety devices on the lock gates which prevent people from getting trapped between the lock gate and the lock wall. Once one of the safety devices is triggered, all lights flash red and the gate movement is interrupted. In order to continue the locking process, the request switch in the lock chamber must be pressed again.
  2. In the event of an emergency, the locking process can be interrupted using the red emergency switch in the lock chamber. All lights flash red. The locking process can be reactivated by the system operator. The fault message is automatically sent to the operator.
  3. In the event of a general malfunction, all traffic lights also flash red and the lock is not operational.
  4. If the lock is not in operation (see lock times), all traffic lights are off.

Rules for the Use of Water Tourism Facilities

  • The water tourism facilities (jetties, locks, etc.) in the Leipzig Neuseenland water network are for general tourist use and to support water sports in the area of ​​recreational and competitive sports. At the same time, the facilities are intended to contribute to the protection and preservation of the shore areas by allowing everyone access to the waterways in the Leipzig Neuseenland water network.

Information on water tourism facilities

Please ensure that you handle the system with care.

Every user of the facility is obliged to comply with the shipping regulations and water usage rules.

Barbecuing, sunbathing, swimming, fishing, the use of open fires in the area of ​​the facility or other inappropriate uses of the water tourism facility are prohibited.

Contaminating the facility is prohibited. Waste must be disposed of properly.

When docking and unloading, consideration must be given to surrounding traffic.

In poor weather and lighting conditions, usage behavior must be adapted to the external conditions. Winter maintenance is not carried out.

The facility may not be used if the use of the water is prohibited in the event of high or low water or for any other reason. The use of the water tourism facility is also prohibited if it is visibly flooded or if its functionality is noticeably restricted as a result of natural events.

The city of Leipzig is crossed by a floodplain landscape of European importance (Natura 2000). The area is also protected at national level as a landscape conservation area, parts of it as a nature reserve. Certain stretches of water require special protection due to particularly sensitive flora and fauna. Special rules of use apply here. Please respect nature and do not navigate marked and closed off tributaries. Only use the designated and marked places for mooring.

warnings and water levels

Information about flood warnings and water levels can be obtained online from the State Flood Center or the Office for Environmental Protection of the City of Leipzig, the district offices and from rental agencies.

If the waters are flooded, you should refrain from taking a boat trip or cancel it immediately for your own safety.
At the Palmengarten weir, when the water level is high, a special warning is given by a red ball that is clearly visible on the building above the central pillar.

You should also avoid navigating the waters at low water levels (< 30 cm for human-powered boats and < 60 cm for motorboats), not only for reasons of nature conservation and water ecology, but also for your own safety.

Flood warning from the city of Leipzig via SMS and email

The city of Leipzig offers a new service for flood reports. flood warning system you will be warned quickly and easily about the dangers of flooding via SMS or email. You will receive a warning message corresponding to the flood level that has occurred for the endangered areas of the rivers Weiße Elster, Pleiße, Parthe and the Burgaue (northern floodplain forest).

To do this, you must register yourself in the warning system. The citizens' hotline at +49 (0) 341 123-0 will help you with registration and if you have any questions.

The SMS warning service (receiving warning messages) is free of charge. Users of the service incur costs for the SMS to register or deregister from the service, depending on the contractual conditions of the customer's mobile phone provider. For technical reasons, the SMS warning service cannot guarantee the delivery of an SMS 100%. Outages are to be expected, particularly in the event of disruptions to the mobile phone network, the Internet or the power supply, as can occur during flooding. The SMS warning service does not replace local instructions from authorities such as the city of Leipzig, the police or emergency services in a dangerous situation. These must be followed without fail. In principle, any warranty or liability claims arising from the use of the SMS warning service are excluded for the reasons stated.

A uniform guidance and information system for the Leipzig New Lake District Tourist Water Association is to be gradually implemented over the next few years.

This is intended to regulate boat traffic and enable safe use for recreational and competitive sports as well as passenger shipping. The new instructions are part of the boat courses most frequently used by water tourism, using human-powered boats, and passenger shipping, and are intended to ensure increased attention at bridge crossings and junctions as well as in the training areas of water sports clubs. They also provide driving and behavior tips and indicate "lanes".

The use of motorized watercraft (motorboats and sailing boats with auxiliary motors) in Leipzig's New Lake District must be applied for in advance.
