The Leipzig Christmas Market tradition dates back to 1458. This means that it is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. With its unique cultural and culinary attractions in the middle of the fascinating historical backdrop of the city centre and its 300 stands, it is one of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany

The Leipzig Christmas Market offers a colourful programme again in 2019 with lots to discover, even for the youngest visitors.

Opening hours 2019

The festive opening of the Christmas Market will take place on 26 November at 5:00 pm on Leipzig's market square.

Christmas market daily opening hours:

Sunday to Thursday 10:00 am to 9:00 pm

Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am - 10:00 pm

Differing opening hours:

26 November 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

23 December: 10:00 am - 8:00 pm (only at market square)

Highlights for the littlest guests

Bright eyes and bushy tails are part of the Christmas season. Leipzig offers a lot to make children's hearts race during the cosy season:

Santa Claus arrives: 30 November 2019 around 11:00 am on platform 6 

Meet Santa: Wednesday to Friday 4:00 pm-4:45 pm  (market square stage)

Elves' workshop and children's bakery: handcrafts and baking for children, 30 November - 20 December 2019, Monday to Friday 2:00 pm-7:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday 11:00 am-7:00 pm (Augustusplatz in front of the opera)

Children's baking at Café Zimtstern: Cookie baking, Monday to Friday 10:00 am -1:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am -12:00 pm (market square)

Pop Up - Christmas markets

Discoveries apart from the big markets

There are many great Pop Up markets with various themes to discover throughout Leipzig. They usually open for just a few days at a time and are known for their home-made and lovingly designed products and friendly atmosphere. 

Pop-up Christmas markets in and around Leipzig

The Christmas market in the castle courtyard at the Markleeberg Gatehouse will attract numerous visitors again this year. From 7.12 to 8.12.2019, the market will open its doors at 2 pm and offer a varied selection of Christmas treats and goods. Other highlights include a coffee concert in the Gatehouse, music in the Auenkirche and a craft workshop in the Schlossgalerie for children.

The first advent weekend (29.11-1.12.2019) also marks the beginning of the annual Christmas market in Taucha. Many merchants and restaurateurs offer their products on the market square. The main attraction is the traditional cutting of the gaint Taucha stollen. There is also a Christmas bazaar in the Kulturscheune (culture shed) that is home to Santa's post office.

The historical Christmas market in Trebsen Castle opens its doors on 3 Advent weekends with numerous artists, workshops, musicians and much more. The taverns and sausage stands ensure full bellies and a wonderful visit.

On the first Advent weekend (29.11 to 1.12.19), the Geithain Christmas Market opens on the market square. In addition to the typical stalls, the hut party on Saturday and the Christmas raffle on Sunday are just two of the weekend's highlights. There is even something for the kids: they can look forward to the art and craft tent.

Once again this year, the neighbourhood Advent market takes place in the garden area of the cafe and bar "Zum Wilden Heinz" and offers a rich mixture of different stands. Come visit the market from 29.11 to 1.12.2019.

On 14.12.2019 the 7th Vegan Christmas Market takes place at the Feinkost in Leipzig. Many treats, crafts and informational stands, campfires and gnomes await you. Admission is free.

Although there are still a few months until WGT, a visit to the Dark XMas Market in the Moritzbastei is a wonderful way to wait out the winter. On 1.12.2019, you can buy handmade gothic Christmas gifts and decorative items.

On the second and third Advent weekends Westwerk opens its doors for a cosy Christmas market. Lots and lots of artists, designers and artisans present their work: For example, the Herbarium Leipzig, the Auwald Bar, the Leipziger Spirituosen Manufaktur, holzART - Leipzig creative wood games - and so on are on site.

Westwerk Leipzig

Again this year Imkerei Beer invites you to the Advent Market on 15.12.2019. Mead, sausages, and crêpes are ready for merry munching. The Alpaca farmer at the market is sure to make the children excited. And Santa will make an appearance with a sack full of gifts.

On 8.12.2019, the children, young people, colleagues and residents of the Generationenhof will ring in the Christmas season together. There are Christmas tastings and attractions for young and old alike. Handmade products are also available for donations.

The Delitzsch Advent Market opens on the second Advent weekend (6.12 to 8.12.2019). There, more than 80 merchants and performers sweeten the cosy Advent season with their gifts and products. It is a weekend for the whole family.

In the afternoon of the first Advent, the Dölitz Advent Market opens again in the agra-Park. Starting from 1 pm many small market stalls, home-made mulled wine and tasty dishes await your visit. There are also numerous special activities for children, such as the children's bakery.

The Mühlstraße will also once again have a small yet lovely Christmas market this year. Arrival by S-Bahn and car

Leave your car and take the city tunnel and the good mass transit network in Leipzig city centre for a relaxed stroll over to the Leipzig Christmas Market - without having to waste time searching for a parking space. The stops "Markt" and "Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz" are located directly at the Leipzig Christmas Market.

If you are travelling by car, we recommend that you use the P+R spots in Leipzig. The underground car park at Augustusplatz is only accessible via Georgiring. The exit from the underground car park is via Goethestraße.

Information for bus tour operators

Please note: Bus parking on Goethestraße is currently not available. 

The bus parking at Oberer Dittrichring can only be used as a stop for getting on and off the bus.
