Leipzig for nature lovers
Experience nature in Leipzig and the surrounding region
Auwald Floodplain Forest, Rosental park, parks, Botanical Gardens, "Wildpark" (wildlife park), waterways, the New Lake District – the list of Leipzig's excursions for nature lovers is long and lush! On this page we help you to beat your way through the "Leipzig Jungle". By that we don't mean the urban jungle, but rather the plentiful green oases in Leipzig awaiting your discovery.
Whether you are on foot, by bicycle or on the water – hardly any other city gives you the feeling of enjoying a time-out in nature while remaining in the heart of the city. This is most impressively illustrated by a bird's eye view. The viewing platformsof the City Hochhaus skyscraper and the Monument to the Battle of the Nations are ideal places for sweeping views over Leipzig. For other opportunities to get a bird's-eye view, try a small excursion to Rosental or southern Leipzig, where the "Wackelturm" (Wobbly Tower) and Fockeberg (wreckage hill near Fockestraße) offer great views. From here you can marvel at the largest forested floodplain area in Central Europe, which runs directly through Leipzig's city centre. If you're keen for a hike, check out our blog article "Raus ins Grüne" ("Out into the Countryside"). In it, we describe five of our favourite hiking routes.
To experience an unexpectedly green perspective on Leipzig, you can try a boat tour on Leipzig's waterways. Natural, wild riverbanks and an exceptionally diverse array of flora and fauna will warm the cockles of your nature-loving heart.
Tips: To discover the most green space on a time crunch, rent a bicycle and experience Leipzig's Green Ring. For longer stays, don't miss the Leipzig New Lake District, and for all exotic nature lovers, the Gondwanaland tropics hall in the Leipzig Zoo is a must-see.
