Since 1867, the "Leipziger Reit- und Rennverein Scheibenholz e. V." has been in charge of the racecourse property in the Leipzig Auwald. The racecourse was so popular that it was redesigned at the beginning of the 19th century due to the ever-increasing number of visitors. In addition to a new grandstand, a restaurant was added. The inauguration was celebrated on 25 May 1907.

After suffering severe damage during the two World Wars, the first German post-war race day was held in Leipzig's Scheibenholz on 12 August 1945, thanks to the energy of many club members and volunteers. Leipzig thus set the stage for the revival of horse racing in the four occupation zones.

Today, the racecourse is a permanent fixture in Leipzig's sports, leisure and cultural landscape. Every year on 1 May, thousands of visitors flock to the traditional opening race of the season. At least as popular are the fashion race day, the international race day, summer cinema, concerts as well as antique and flea markets.
