Whether you are looking for active watersports or a relaxed day out bathing with family and friends, here you can find your "favourite lake".

Recreational Area on the Outskirts of Leipzig

The much-loved Lake Kulkwitz recreational area borders on the towns of Leipzig and Markranstädt. Not only its exceptional water quality and variety of sports and leisure activities will inspire you, but also the lush flora and fauna! Bathing in Lake Kulkwitz has permitted since the 1970s, and the lake is considered a real gem amongst divers in particular. With its underwater park and visibility range of over 10 metres, it is one of the most popular places to dive in central Germany. Whether you're keen on surfing, water skiing, taking a boat trip or having a go at stand-up paddling – at Lake Kulkwitz you will certainly not get bored.

Bathing Beaches

  • Miltitz Beach – Some sections of this long stretch of beach have a lifeguard during the bathing season and it is especially popular with families. Near the holiday resort, there is a volleyball court and you can play table tennis.

  • Lausen Beach – At Lausen beach, you are welcome with or without your swimming costume. Alongside the boat hire and diving school, you can also play five a side football.

  • Göhrenz Beach – This nice quiet bathing spot next to a little forest of poplar trees has a diving school and is a great place for individualists and those seeking relaxation away from the hustle and bustle.

  • Markranstädt Beach – This extensive beach promenade has various leisure activities on offer and invites you to stroll up and down it at any time of the year. In the bathing area, you will find wooden jetties about 40 metres long (130 feet), neat grassy areas and places to buy food and drinks as well as wheelchair access to the lake.

A lively leisure oasis with Saxony's longest sandy beach

The historic transformation of Lake Cospuden from a lignite mining site to a lively leisure oasis exemplifies the region's development. Zöbigker Harbour is a popular meeting place for old and young and offers water sports, restaurants and passenger boat rides as well as bicycle and boat hire. On the northern shore, Saxony's longest sandy beach welcomes visitors for a swim and a game of volleyball. Water tourers can paddle along Waterway Route 1 all the way from the city harbour in the heart of Leipzig to Lake Cospuden. There is a magnificent view from the Bistumshöhe Tower across the New Harth and the BELANTIS Theme Park.

Bathing Beaches

  • North Beach – This well-loved beach with its fine sand is just over half a mile long. It has a snack bar that sells cool drinks and delicious snacks. The barrier-free bathing jetty enables bathers with physical disabilities to roll right into the water in special wheelchairs.

  • East Beach – Close to Zöbik Harbour, you can find the East Beach with its restaurants, bathing areas and water sports. When the wind and weather are right, you can watch windsurfers practising from this beach section.

Lake Markkleeberg

Whitewater rafting and much more

A popular destination for a day out at the lake is to Markkleeberg Canoe park – Germany's unique attraction for whitewater fun. Hikers, cyclists and inline skaters can circle Lake Markkleeberg on a tarmac path or extend their tour to the neighbouring lake. Sailing, diving, surfing and climbing are very popular in the summer season. If you prefer a more relaxed approach, you can explore the lake on the modern passenger boats. At the Model Park near the family-friendly Auenhain Lake Park, you can ride on the garden steam trains. By going through the canoe park lock, water tourers can get to the neighbouring Lake Störmthal. Right next to the canal that leads to Lake Störmthal, the 2000 m² stone experience area with its various points of interest invites you to come and explore.

Note: The canoe lock is undergoing repairs and is closed until further notice. Boats can be carried round the lock.

  • Auenhain Beach – At the largest lakeside bathing area, there is a beach volleyball court and a barbeque area as well as the only beach where dogs are permitted.

  • Wachau Beach – This peaceful stretch of beach in an idyllic location can be reached on foot or by bike.

  • Lakeside promenade / East shore bathing beach – This section of beach is especially popular with families who have small children as it has a life guard as well as shallow water and a sandy shore.

Bathing beaches

  • At Lake Störmthal, guests who want to dive in will find a total of four swimming areas – on the Magdeborn Peninsular, at the LAGOVIDA holiday resort as well as at the Grunaer Weg and the Störmthaler Ufer. All of the above are natural bathing areas. At the LAGOVIDA beach, there is wheelchair access to the water.

Leisure Fun at Lake "Störmi"

Lake Markkleeberg is connected at its southern end to its big brother, Lake Störmthal. Even from far away, the mining and technology park is visible as an attraction. You can visit the floating cultural island VINETA on a historical amphibious vehicle or take the ferry. 3D archery, motorboat rides, sailing trips, windsurfing and spectacular flights with the VINETA-Fly jetlev are all possible at Lake Störmthal. Every year in August, the "Highfield" 3-day festival takes place with live acts ranging from rock to hip-hop and as many as 35,000 visitors. The LAGOVIDA holiday resort guarantees a relaxed stay right by the water.

  • Cape Zwenkau – The public bathing beach is on the south-eastern shore of Lake Zwenkau. Thanks to its shallow waters, it is suitable for small children. Parking spaces and bicycle racks are available close to the beach.

On the lakeside stage at the Hayna Biedermeier beach, you can be entertained by musicals and concerts, always with a beautiful view of the lake included for free.

Werbelin, Grabschütz and Zwochau Lakes

Not far from Lake Schladitz is Lake Werbelin. It is the largest lake between Leipzig and Delitzsch and is a designated nature reserve and bird sanctuary. The neighbouring Lake Grabschütz constantly refills with groundwater. A nature trail leads all the way round the lake and offers all kinds of interesting information for both young and old. Lake Grabshütz is reserved for nature conservation whereas its little brother, Lake Zwochau is devoted to recreation.

Bathing beaches

  • Biedermeier Beach – There is a small bathing bay with a sandy beach at the left-hand end of the lakeside stage.

  • Schladitz Bay – This beach area with sand and a grassy sunbathing area guarantees both water sports fans and families with small children plenty of fun in the water. During the summer season, a fee is charged to use the beach.

Lake Hain

A Lake With History

Covering almost 600 ha (1500 acres), Lake Hain is one of the largest lakes in the Leipzig New Lake District. It offers a place to relax as well as a variety of water sports options, all just 20 minutes by car from the outskirts of Leipzig.

On the southern shore of Lake Hain, you will find the Kahnsdorf lagoon embedded in the idyllic historical village of Kahnsdorf. Enjoy a pleasant stroll along the mile-long promenade, which is lined with holiday homes, cafés and restaurants, as well as a boat rental. The harbour has a Mediterranean flair.

Covering almost 600 ha (1500 acres), Lake Hain is one of the largest lakes in the Leipzig New Lake District. It offers a place to relax as well as a variety of water sports options, all just 20 minutes by car from the outskirts of Leipzig.

On the southern shore of Lake Hain, you will find the Kahnsdorf lagoon embedded in the idyllic historical village of Kahnsdorf.   • Rötha Beach – This area of beach is not only perfect for sunbathers but also offers a shady spot for anyone looking for one.

  • Kahnsdorf Beach – Not far away from the restaurants in the harbour, this magnificent sandy beach offers bathers a little jetty and a bathing platform to relax on.

Kriebstein Dam

About 25 minutes of walk from Kriebstein Castle, you will find the Kriebstein dam. It is recognised as one of the most spectacularly scenic dams in Saxony and was built between 1927 and 1930 to protect against flooding and generate energy.

The wall of the dam is 34 m (112 feet) high and 235 m (770 feet) long and is embedded in a fascinating landscape. Hiking trails of various lengths offer breathtaking views. For those who prefer to explore the dam from the water, there are rowing boats and paddle boats for hire as well as a fleet of passenger boats. Fans of climbing can test their skills on seven spectacular obstacle courses at the climbing forest located here. Cultural events at the dam are hosted on the Kriebstein Lakeside Stage. The repertoire includes musicals and concerts among other things. The Reservoir Festival with a parade of boats, a firework display, various musical highlights and a colourful mix of supporting events attracts large numbers of visitors to Kriebstein every year on the last weekend in July.

There are B&Bs, holiday flats, hotels and camp sites at the reservoir where guests can book accommodation. Those who prefer something a little more exclusive can sleep in various types of tree house.
