Blüthner Pianofortefabrik – 27 June 2022

On 18 November 1853 Julius Blüthner founded his own Pianofortefabrik (piano factory) with assets of 1,660 thalers, 2 neugroschen and 1 ¼ pfennig. To this day his pianos and grand pianos decorate countless concert stages all over the world. Not only Richard Wagner, but many other singers, musicians and composers, such as Gustav Mahler, A. Lloyd Webber, Pjotr I. Tschaikowski and Claude Debussy chose the fascinating warm sound of a Blüthner. The renowned company, which has been family-owned for over 150 years, stands for quality, individuality and precision. That is why every single instrument that leaves the factory is meticulously examined beforehand by a member of the Blüthner family. The long production time of the mostly handmade instruments says a lot about the value of the products.

After the welcoming champagne, you will be taken on a guided 2-hour tour of the factory during which you will be immersed in the history of piano manufacturing and learn what else is hidden behind the golden lettering.

How about a delicious lunch before you head back towards Leipzig and let the day fade away in peace? Enjoy the charm of the 19th century in the historic Forsthaus Raschwitz, a former knight's estate located just outside Leipzig. Even in former times it was a popular excursion destination to which many guests made pilgrimages on foot through the Leipzig Auwald forest to Markkleeberg. Those who could, let themselves be driven along in their noble carriage.

Eisenach – 29 June 2022

Eisenach has the second-largest Richard Wagner collection in the world after Bayreuth, and it is displayed in the Reuter-Wagner-Museum. Marvel at the well-known "Tannhäuser" scores featuring Wagner's handwritten notes and stage directions or take a look at his death mask. The exhibition presented by Nicolaus Oesterlein contains more than 20,000 objects as well as the library with a collection of over 5,000 volumes. A special highlight is the restored table piano on which the young Wagner once took lessons in composition from the Leipzig Thomaskantor Christian Theodor Weinlig.

A visit to the Wartburg is a must. The UNESCO World Heritage Site towers above the roofs of the city and offers a fantastic view over the Thuringian forest all the way to the Rhön and far into Hesse. You will surely understand why the legendary castle captivated the composer to such an extent that in 1842, he made it the setting for his romantic opera "Tannhäuser". Fascinated by the enchanting landscape and the warmth radiating from the castle, he created the most famous German National Opera in three acts for the Germany of the time. Numerous paintings by the artist Lucas Cranach the Elder, an important representative of the German Renaissance, have also found their place here.

Let the evening come to a culinary close in the Landgrafenstube ("Landgraves' Room") and enjoy the magical sunset with food and drink. The chef de cuisine Ms Reinhardt merges the historically documented menu sequences of the banquets with a modern culinary philosophy. Let yourself be inspired by Thuringian cuisine before you head back to Leipzig.

Bad Lauchstädt – 4 July 2022

The mineral springs were discovered by chance at the beginning of the 18th century, which later gave the town the reputation of a fashionable and luxury spa, attracting visitors from near and far. The designation as the "Saxon Pyrmont" is therefore no accident. During a tour of the City of Goethe, you will visit the Goethe Theatre, which was built in just three months with the aim of creating a cheap but modern and spacious theatre. The building by the renowned architect Heinrich Gentz was regarded as groundbreaking in its time. To this day, it is the only originally preserved Goethe-era theatre building in Germany and is still used extensively. In this very theatre, in 1834 Richard Wagner conducted Mozart's "Don Giovanni", where he met his future wife, the actress Minna Planer.

The New Schiller House, which is located in a late baroque town house in the centre of Bad Lauchstädt, recounts the theatre history of the historic town on three floors. The Schiller Room, built in classicist style, is located on the top floor and was created in memory of Friedrich Schiller's first stay in Bad Lauchstädt in July 1789.

Stroll through the beautiful Kurpark Gardens and enjoy the unique ambience of this historic place, which was not only highly appreciated by Goethe, Schiller and Wagner, but also by such famous figures as Hegel, Gottsched and Wieland.

At the Kurpark-Hotel you can round off your excursion with a delicious lunch in the cosy hall. Culinary delicacies await you and are dedicated above all to the delightful Goethe.

Get to know the beautiful city on a guided tour through the old town. Discover its chequered history, from the Middle Ages to the glorious Baroque period, right up to the present day, and imagine how Richard Wagner once strolled through the picturesque alleys of the city where he lived longer than in any other.

From 1814 until 1827 he visited the famous Kreuzschule, some years later he had his artistic breakthrough there and he celebrated his greatest successes. Lunch is followed by a guided tour of one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, the Semperoper. Discover the secrets of the over 170-year history of this imposing building. Graupa - 11 July 2022

On your trip to Graupa, visit Lohengrin-Haus, the former large farmhouse of the Schäfer family, where Wagner composed the music for the opera of the same name during his summer holidays in 1846. A large number of original memorabilia, such as correspondence and souvenirs from his Parisian period, as well as a comprehensive media library with Wagner's works await you in the Saxon-style farmhouse parlours and furnished rooms. In the hunting lodge from the 18th century, exhibitions on "Wagner in Saxony", " Poetry", "Composition", "Theatre and Stage", "Orchestra Pit" and "Reception of Wagner" await you. In the adjoining castle park you can follow the Richard Wagner hiking trail marked with informative plaques.

The Wagnerdenkmal in Liebethaler Grund, designed by Richard Guhr, is the largest Wagner monument in the world. Surrounded by the fantastic landscape of the Saxon Switzerland, you can marvel at this site. Originally designed for the Great Garden, World War I and the Great Depression led to the erection of the monument at the Wesenitz. Situated on the Dichter-Musiker-Maler-Weg ("Poet-Musician-Painter-Route"), it attracts many people interested in culture and nature.

Ermlitz - 13 July 2022

The small town of Ermlitz is situated in one of the most historically significant regions of Germany, the Saalekreis. Perhaps you have heard of the Romanesque Road, the Saale Valley or the famous Nebra Sky Disk? The cultural heritage centre in Ermlitz is just one of the many picturesque castles, palaces and manor houses you will find there. Discover the baroque manor of the literary family Apel and be enchanted by the beauty and versatility of this place. The highlight of the excursion is a small Wagner concert.

Guido Theodor Apel (1811-1867), a childhood friend of Wagner, whom he met during his schooldays at the Nikolaischule (1828-1830) in Leipzig, also had a great interest in music and poetry. It was with him that Wagner experienced his first "contact with the higher bourgeois comfort". As can be seen from the correspondence between the two, they maintained a close friendship despite their different origins. In the manor house collection, which includes 42 original letters from Wagner to Apel, you will get an idea of the everyday life, the relationship and the artistic work of the two friends who between 1832 and 1836 spent a lot to time together. It is therefore not surprising that Wagner wrote a piece of music to a poem by his friend and composed the background music to Apel's drama "Columbus".

Another highlight is the park of the manor. Arranged in the English garden style, you can still admire the original and very rare trees that Wagner once looked at. See for yourself this wonderful scenery and follow in the footsteps of the young Richard Wagner.
