Leipzig's oldest municipal cemetery has an enchanting atmosphere. Its green ivy vines, ornate tombs and old trees, invites fans of history and romance to linger. Directly behind the Grassi museums, you'll find the historic St. John's Cemetery with a long history and the tombs of many famous people. In 1536 Duke Georg declared this place an official burial place in Leipzig and since then a lot has happened of which the cemetery has been a witness. Today, burials no longer take place here and the cemetery serves as a monument to Leipzig's history of music, science and politics. The famous personalities whose graves can still be visited here today include the museum founder Franz Dominic Grassi, Richard Wagner's mother as well as his sister and Luther's companion Dr Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach.
