Augustusplatz is the hub of the city centre. From here a large part of the trams run in all directions. It was named after Friedrich August, the first king of Saxony. Here, some 40,000 square metres of buildings from various decades of the 20th century are situated together . These include the Leipzig Opera House, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Augusteum and Paulinum of the Leipzig University. In addition to the university's main building, the City-Hochhaus is the second tallest building in the new federal states.
