Geoportal - Schmalspurbahnhof Mügeln
Geopark "Porphyry Stone Kingdom in Saxony"
It is anticipated that in august 2019 a new geoportal of the geopark "Porphyry Stone Kingdom in Saxony" will open at the Mügeln narrow-gauge railway station. The visitor centre will focus on the kaolin resource, its occurrence and promotion in the past and present, and its use in craft and industry. In addition, the history and technology of the narrow-gauge railway is a must-see on a tour of the station.
The Mügeln station served as a central transshipment point especially for kaolin, which has been mined for over 100 years in the immediate vicinity of the city Mügeln and was continuously supported until 2001 by the Döllnitz trains. Today, the narrow-gauge railway operates only with diesel locomotives in daily passenger and student traffic. On selected weekends and public holidays as well as special events, a more than 100-year-old steam locomotive, the "Sächsische IV K", is used.
