As Arthur Nikisch's successor, the young Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911) took over the position of second conductor at the Leipzig Stadttheater, newly opened in 1868. Wagner's "Tannhäuser", von Weber's "Freischütz", Beethoven's "Fidelio" and Halévy's "Die Jüdin" were performed with great success thanks to him.

Mahler also attracted a lot of attention beyond the city limits, e.g. with the opera "Die drei Pintos" by Carl Maria von Weber, which he completed. The final version was premièred in January 1888 under Mahler's direction at the Leipzig Theatre.

Mahler not only cultivated an artistic relationship with von Weber's family, but also a friendship. Motivated by his work, he finished his 1st symphony in March 1888. But due to disagreements at the theatre, tensions in the ensemble and opposition to Mahler, the composer left the city of Leipzig a few months later. The Gustav Mahler House is located on Gustav Adolf Straße 12 in Leipzig's Waldstraßenviertel.
