Paulinum - Aula and University Church St. Pauli
Memorial of the St. Paul Church, destroyed in 1968
During the almost 600 years of university history, students in particular have repeatedly made a major contribution to the city's musical life. They took part in the Collegia musica by Telemann and Bach, played in coffee houses, in the opera or in Leipzig churches, and also formed choirs. The University Singers' Association of St. Pauli, founded in 1822, for example, was headed by Max Reger in 1907/08.
Many musical events were closely connected with the University Church until the latter was blown up in 1968 at the instigation of the SED leadership. Today, at the same location, the Paulinum, reminiscent of a church from the outside, unites the university auditorium and a devotional room inside. The new building is intended to commemorate the former University Church of St. Pauli.
