The first depiction of the church was as early as 1309. A preserved sacrament niche, with a depiction of the holy Nicholas and the holy Katharina with sword and wheel dates back to the late 15th century. In 1706, the foundation stone for a reconstruction of the church was laid. In 1785, a fire broke out. The required restoration works were completed in 1787. The pulpit, with passageways on the sides for holy communion originates from the first half of the 18th century, The current colour composition corresponds to the painting from the end of the 19th century. The Friedrich Gerhardt Organ, located on the west gallery, dates back to around 1880. The patronage of the church ended with the agricultural reforms of 1956. The church became communal property and has been since 2000 under the administration of the city Schkeuditz. In 2005, religion teacher Henrick Mroska bought the church for a symbolic 1 Euro and founded the "Culture and Pilgrim Society Kleiliebenau e.V."
Fredrich Gerhardt (1826 - 1922) of Kölleda mastered organ building under E.S. Hesse in Dachwig near Erfurt. Afterwards, he was employed, among others, at Kreutzbach (Borna), Buchholz (Berlin) and Schmidt (Olderburg) In 1853, he founded his own company in Kölleda. From 1863 - 1894 he had his workshop in Merseburg. The current catalogue encompasses 48 organs. The organ in Kleinliebenau was constructed using older pieces (pedal windchest and two bellows) in around 1880. The contract has not yet been found. In 1918, the specification was extended by the addition of Gabme 8'. I/6 In 2012, a basic restoration by the restoration workshop of Joh. Lindner, Radebeul was completed.
